August is still a medley in my ears, but the November air and the orange, yellow, bronze wind of her breath flood all other senses. She is the bite in my cheeks, where my heart belongs. It is in her arms new memories are made, the bittersweet tang of preemptive nostalgia blooms in her smile. A new friend walks home to the right, his red backpack and determined gait disappearing into the brush. An old friend’s car backs briefly into my driveway, pausing only long enough for the most beloved friend to walk her bike across the street towards home. His car drives away for good, grey like the taste of the moment’s image blooming before me. The other two will be back, and they’ll add to the prick when I remember. How something so simple as one returning for a forgotten flannel, lingering for one more farewell embrace, and the other dwelling on my doorstep for help finding his way home, could endear them to me so fondly. A mundane moment, but these days so few and far between I cannot help but hold them close. What has the word come to today, that I sit now and must romanticize a moment just to stay sane?
