best of my 2020: the haunting of bly manor
‘’ it’s you. it’s me. it’s us. ‘’
this is an early post because i won’t be available to be here posting later but happy new year!! it’s been a really wild ride this year and like, i’ve gotten injured and sick too many times istg i just need this year to be OVER and i am so happy i’ve gotten to meet all of you, i have personal notes in my drafts but uhhh it was supposed to be for christmas but i’ll make it for like valentines day or something i’m sorry HAHAHAH
THIS IS MY 2020 WRAPUP LMAO
I obviously spent most of the year at home, and I used some of that time reading over 100 books! Here are my favorites (including the ones I'd shared mid-year) in case you're looking for eclectic recommendations.
And 2020 is out the door! 98 finished works (including a few polished sketches, and representing each full comic with one square.) Please excuse the messy edit. It’s hard to look at all my art laid out and not think I should have done more, improved more, risked more, but I’m reminding myself that this year was my return to digital after a long hiatus and not much digital experience before that, so I’m trying to be kind to myself (and remind myself that sketches are ok, too.)
This year I completed five mini-comics, ranging from one to eight pages. I found a brush and style that I rather like sketching and inking with (though I’m looking to try out some new inking brushes in 2021.) I participated in an exchange, and was accepted to a zine for the first time (both with absolutely wonderful people involved, so thank you to everyone who made those such fantastic experiences!) I found a few painting brushes/techniques that work quite well for me, and was gifted a wonderful color-accurate monitor so I can hopefully, now, see the proper colors I’m working with.
It’s been a strange, hard journey with a lot of bumps along the way as well as a lot of bright spots. Here’s hoping for a better year with more art to come. <3
my twenty twenty favourites! (shows and music because i’m going to make a book list- )
songs/albums
put your records on by rick momney
this is a single i discovered recently and it’s one of my favourite songs at the moment. i believe it’s a cover of corinne bailey rae’s original. rae’s original is like a fever dream. it feels like a summer spent at your grandmother’s childhood home feel- if i had to describe it, it’d be like sunshine streaming through the windows of your mother’s kitchen. very home-y, comfortable and familiar. however, to me, this cover feels like summer holidays nowadays. full of new experiences, more freedom and excitement- like the bubbles building up in a bottle of fizzy lemonade before it all rushes out of the bottle. i waffled a bit there but lesson: this is a good song.
melodrama by lorde
a classic that i fell in love with all over again. a song that has helped me a lot throughout 2020 was writer in the dark- my favourite song by lorde and one of my favourite songs.
[12:00] by loona
this album- it’s just such a ridiculously loona. why not? was probably my favourite girl group title track this year... it’s catchy and had so many differentmv concepts that perfectly melted into this music video that just worked perfectly. my favourite song from this album is universe.
shows/ movies
the queen’s gambit (netflix)
(a few content/trigger warnings for this show- drug abuse, underage drinking, sexual references and profanity.)
this show follows the story of chess prodigy elizabeth ‘beth’ harmon set in the 1960s. i started watching the series because of anya taylor joy and thomas brodie sangster bUT i stayed because of the beautiful cinematography and the sets and costumes. it was just gorgeous. the colours for the most part are very warm and reflect the mood of the scenes perfectly. so yes. watch this show please.
haikyuu!
where do i begin with this show. well, it’s an incredibly popular anime following our main character hinata shoyo on his passion with volleyball- the show starts when he’s in middle school (very briefly) and the majority is his time on karasuno high school’s volleyball team. i’m currently on season two and i watched it all in the dub (i know, i’m sorry) but it’s hilarious- the characters are all unique and funny and insanely talented.
avatar : the last airbender
i watched this for the first time right at the start of lockdown and i say this confidently- every person should watch this show. i feel like it’s best to go into the show with no previous understanding or knowledge of it as it’ll feel so much more magical. the friendships and adventures the characters are just so great-
parasite
oh my goodness. like avatar, you should go into it knowing nothing. all you need is: the poor kim family enter the lives of the wealthy park family. and something goes wrong. there’s a reason why this film got so many awards.
these are the little things that truly made 2020 a better year. here’s to more small things to make our lives happier in 2021.
