TIP TOE (RTD) THOUGHTS

spoilers ahead for channel 4's 'tip toe'

i've been struggling to pin down what exactly about 'tip toe' bothered me the most - there's a fair few things, in honesty... but one of the bigger issues with it is how shallow and flat it is. too much of it relies on telling the audience certain things, rather than showing them. you can also add that much of what we're told is also almost immediately glossed over/dropped, for example: when zee mentions her GP has stopped prescribing estrogen, it's never brought up again - nor does the show ever explore the impact that has on zee and her life. it's used as a way to basically shut leo up when he has a moan about pronouns, a kind of 'some people have REAL problems' thing, but it's not utilised in any meaningful way.

the same happens across the show. clive, for one, we know spends his nights watching explicit violent content - but none of it seems in any way related to anti-LGBTQ+ or anti-immigrant content (unless i missed something). there's a single instance of clive talking about some random conspiracy theory, but that's never really brought around again.

melba and stephanie both make some weird comments about transgender people once or twice, leo doesn't challenge them, and neither character expands on the brief comment they've made. stephanie points out that leo can be misogynistic and expects to get away with it because he's gay - but again, it's a surface level interaction that lasts a few minutes and is dropped entirely.

i'm not entirely sure what was meant to be taken from leo's ex and his new girlfriend. casual biphobia? a plot device for clive to bring up when he tries to insist his son might 'stop' being gay one day? which is also biphobic, but hey, what's new?

the messages of the show are important. one point that's made quite well is older queers being naieve about the dangers faced by the queer community in 2026. melba's conversation with leo about it highlights it, but the writing is monologue-heavy and almost preachy. it also centers the experience specifically of queer white men - understandable, since the writer and main character are exactly that. however, especially with melba's monologue, the show presents itself as something intended to comment on the violence faced by trans individuals, but it never dives deeper into that experience. it's all one-off remarks and snarky comments that go unchallenged.

i'm familiar with RTD's writing. his first stint on doctor who was great, and i'm a huge fan of his previous show 'Years & Years'. i feel like he tried to replicate what he did with 'Years & Years', particularly with 'tip toe''s ending. it reminded me of an episode of 'Years & Years' which also features a shocking and tragic death - but the groundwork for it has been carefully laid out beforehand, plus it mirrors many real-life instances. i understand what RTD is getting at for most of the show - that the tiny little instances of bigotry, left unchallenged, can and do lead to bigger, much more serious incidents. it's just not very well executed here.

it's a limited series, five episodes, and, with short-form media content, writers have the responsibility of strategically presenting important information to the audience, which is something RTD appears to struggle with here. it's not something he's *always* struggled with, but in Tip Toe, it does let the show down a lot as many things are briefly touched on, then dropped and never brought back. i think he maybe tried to cover too much in too short a stretch. the quality may have been improved had the focus been mostly on the rise of anti-transgender sentiment; leo hires many transgender employees (at least, he's supposed to - this is what melba tells us, anyway) and receives hate and vitriol on his TripAdvisor page. but, again, none of this is really ever anything more than just that - telling. we are told much, but shown very little.

the cast and acting are what make the show watchable, in my opinion. david morrissey in particular is outstanding. i've seen criticism of his character clive, some viewers stating that his character makes no sense, which i completely disagree with. i think he's a perfect example of how a normal guy with a family can become this violent, rage-rotted man. he's a deeply insecure man, his marriage has all but failed. he's struggling to find work, and is extremely isolated. he has no friends of his own that we hear of or see, and it's inferred that this is because of the kind of person he is/has become. he has a very specific image of masculinity and knows that he himself fails to match it. he fills the emptiness in his life with vitriol, anger, and conspiracy. he lashes out more and more, getting more uninhibited by the day as he feels his control slipping away from him. although i understand why some viewers may struggle to see this - as was my original statement, the show absolutely fails to establish these things solidly enough within the narrative.

the character of judy is the one voice of reason that exists, but she's greatly under-used and basically ignored.

i'm not saying people shouldn't watch the show- i think everyone should watch/read different things to form their own opinions. this is just me basically venting about my own gripes. the show is good, but it's not great, and i feel it doesn't really cover the wider queer experience in modern day. i probably would give it a solid 3/5 - though most of that is again for the performances.
