9 pm on a Thursday night, over 100,000 people watching Mewtwo Strikes Back airing live on YouTube.
What an incredible movie.
It has been a very long time since I last saw this movie, but I remembered every single moment so vividly. Watching it now as an adult, it is incredible for me to realize more profoundly not only how important of a story it is, but also just how much pokemon has impacted my life.
Ever since I first saw this movie when I was about 5 years old, I have regularly thought about Meowth's line from when he was talking to Clone Meowth: "You're right. We do have a lot in common. The same Earth, the same air, the same sky." 😢❤️
("Maybe if we started looking at what's the same, instead of always looking at what's different, well, who knows?")
The original Japanese is very different, but while initially hard to grasp, under the surface it really does hold the exact same meaning (they are looking up at a cloudy night sky):
「今夜の月は丸いだろうって?そうだニャー。きっと満月だろニャー。おみゃーこんな時にお月さまのことなんて、風流で、哲学してるニャー。」
Very beautiful. And it brings to light exactly why the moon is such a strong theme for Meowth throughout the whole series (in the Japanese version). Huge props to the translator.
Turns out the US release really did change a lot, and it was really interesting to see. But the message is still the same, just as meaningful as it was then as it is now.
