Preview 2020: Previewing and looking ahead to the SEC season with the College Football News All-SEC Team & Top 30 players – Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews 2020 SEC Team Previews, 5 Things To Know East Florida | Georgia | Kentucky |Missouri South Carolina | Tennessee | Vanderbilt West Alabama | Arkansas | Auburn | LSU Miss State | Ole Miss | Texas A&M 2020 PRESEASON CFN SEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR WR Ja’Marr Chase, Jr. LSU Justin Jefferson caught 111 passes, and there were a whole slew of other weapons for Joe Burrow to throw to, but Chase was the Biletnikoff winner as the nation’s best receiver with the greatest season by any wideout in SEC history. He cranked up 84 catches for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. To put that into perspective, he had as many receiving scores or more than all but 58 of the 130 FBS teams, and he had more receiving yards than nine teams. The SEC is loaded once again with tremendous receiving talent, and Chase doesn’t have Burrow around anymore, but he’s still going to be one of the most dangerous all-around weapons in the country. 2020 PRESEASON CFN SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR CB Derek Stingley, Soph. LSU LSU safety Grant Delpit won the Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. He wasn’t event best defensive back on his own team last year – actually, he might have been fourth in the mix – behind Stingley, the lockdown star who came into LSU as a big-time recruit, and showed why right away. The 6-1, 195-pounder led the team with six interceptions, 15 broken up passes, and 38 tackles. There’s some reloading to do in the Tiger secondary, and the stats aren’t going to be as good for Stingley – no one will throw his way – but he’s an NFL starting corner who’ll still be around the college world for the next few seasons. COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS PREVIEW 2020: SYRACUSE ORANGE OFFENSE 3 THINGS TO KNOW – It was supposed to be a little bit of a rebuilding year for the Syracuse offense, but not likethat.QB Tommy DeVito struggled, but that’s partly because he had too many defensive players jumping on his head. The offensive line had a rough year. Four starters are expected back, and senior Airon Servais is an okay veteran at left tackle, but overall the front five can’t be among the three worst in college football in sacks allowed. There’s bulk, there’s the versatility to play around with the lineup, and there’s the upside with experience to be better. But the offense that didn’t average 400 yards per game and scored 27 points or fewer seven times needs time to operate. CFN in 60 Video: Syracuse Orange Preview – DeVito, again, didn’t get a whole lot of help,and now his numbers could skyrocket under new offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert. The junior-to-be has the talent and the arm, and he held up reasonably well despite all the pressure. He took his lumps, only threw five picks, and he was accurate enough to get by. Rex Culpepper is a bigger passer with just enough experience to be totally lost if he gets thrown into the mix. Now the receiving corps has to rise up with leading receiver Trishton Jackson leaving early for the NFL and with three of the top four pass catchers gone. Junior Taj Harris is a good-sized deep threat, and senior Nykeim Johnson can move, but someone has to rise up and replace the volume catches from Jackson. That might come from the tight ends – Aaron Hackett can catch and 292-pound Chris Elmore is the blocking option. – The ground game started to come on over the second half of the season after getting stuffed for a dead stop far too often over the first half. Leading rusher Moe Neal is gone, but the good tandem of junior Jarveon Howard and senior Abdul Adams should be able to handle the workload without a problem. There’s enough depth to shoot for the second 2,000-yard rushing season since 2013. COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS PREVIEW 2020: BYU COUGARS OFFENSE 3 THINGS TO KNOW –The offense was really, really good against the okay to bad teams,and it was really, really just okay against everyone else. The Cougars averaged 444 yards and 28.5 points per game overall. They failed to hit 360 yards against Utah, Tennessee, Washington and Boise State, and they hit 400 or more against everyone else including USC. This year’s offense is full of good veterans for an attack that should be even better, and when it’s not, it should still be able to come through in key moments like it did in the win over the Vols and Broncos. – Zach Wilson didn’t explode like many hoped he would– Thring for 2,382 yards and 11 scores and nine picks – and he ran for 167 yards and three scores. The 6-3, 2101-pounder is accurate, he’s not afraid to take shots, and now he has two years under his belt. The backup situation is terrific with Baylor Romney – who threw seven TD passes and two picks – and Jaren Hall good enough to step in if needed. Both were fine when they got their chances. If Matt Bushman isn’t the best tight end in the country, he’s not terribly far off. The 6-5, 240-pounder led the team with 688 yards and four scores on 47 grabs, but the top three wide receivers are gone. Gunner Romney is a solid junior who caught 31 passes, and Dax Milne made 21 grabs for 285 yards and two scores. The rest of the parts have to fill in, with 604, 215-pound Neil Pau’u the linked No. 3 guy. – All five starters are expected back on a line, but there should be some big fights among a group that was fine, but wasn’t dominant.There’s depth, and there are plenty of options. 6-6, 300-pound junior Brady Christensen is a keeper at left tackle, and junior James Empey has established himself the main man at center. It would be nice if a No. 1 rusher could rise up. Sophomore Sione Finau is back after leading the way with just 359 yards, but he’s likely going to be a part of a rotation around Utah transfer Devontae Henry-Cole. COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS PREVIEW 2020: GEORGIA SOUTHERN EAGLES OFFENSE 3 THINGS TO KNOW – As always, the Georgia Southern offense will revolve around a devastating running game that tries to control the clock and goes on long, exhausting drives. There’s no passing attack – the Eagles were last in the nation with 75 yards per game – but when it all works, this is one tough team to deal with. Eight starters are back, but they have to be even more effective. More on that in the Keys section. – The main parts return in the backfield.QB Shai Werts is back for what seems like his tenth year with the program, running for 740 yards and five scores. Wesley Kennedy ran for a team-high 824 yards and 11 scores in just nine games, and JD King ran for 804 yards and eight scores. It’s a deep, deep group, and it has to be – the top runners take a pounding. The offensive line returns three starters including both starting tackles, but center will be a battle in practices. Lawrence Edwards is a solid guard on either side. – The receivers aren’t totally afterthoughts in this offense,but they can get a little lonely. Malik Murray led the team with 20 catches for 195 yards and three scores, but the other options returning have to be more explosive. Volume catches aren’t a part of the puzzle, but averaging over 14 yards per catch as a team is a must – it averaged just over 12 last year. COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS PREVIEW 2020: WYOMING COWBOYS OFFENSE 3 THINGS TO KNOW – Let’s just say the offense wasn’t always the top priority for the Cowboys.It was effective, and the running game was great, but the passing game was horribly inefficient and the O as a whole finished 106th in the nation. QB Tyler Vander Waal – who started the Arizona Bowl against Georgia State – transferred to Idaho State, but 6-3, 225-pound sophomore Sean Chambers is back after getting knocked out for the year with a knee injury, and 6-5, 221-pound redshirt freshman Levi Williams is back. Now the passing game has to be stronger – Chambers only hit 43% of his passes, but he ran for 567 yards and ten scores. CFN in 60 Video: Utah Preview Utah at Wyoming, Sept. 19 – The receivers weren’t used all that often, but it still matters that the top guys are gone.Raghib Ismail Jr. and Austin Conway tied for the team lead with 23 grabs. They’re both finished, as is TE Josh Harshman. The top returning wide receiver, senior Ayden Eberhardt, only caught eight passes for 168 yards and two scores. Eberhardt is 6-2, and Gunner Gentry is 6-3 – there’s size in the receiving corps, there just isn’t a ton of experience. However … – The running game has the potential to bephenomenal.Along with the running from the quarterbacks, 1,265-yard, six-touchdown run junior back Xazavian Valladay is back along with speedy Titus Swen. These two will each run for over five yards per pop, and there’s more talent ready to roll in the rotation, including former Louisville Cardinal Trey Smith, who ran for 227 yards and three scores in four games. The injury problems of the line last year turn into a big positive this season with all five starters and almost all the top backups returning, starting with All-Mountain West center Keegan Cryder. Even with so much turnover and turmoil through the season, the line was still good in pass protection and was great for the ground game. COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS PREVIEW 2020: IOWA STATE CYCLONES OFFENSE 3 THINGS TO KNOW – The offense took things to another level with the passing game,and the team scored the most points in school history and more than 400 points for the first time since 2002. And then things fizzled out, coming up with 17 in the loss to Kansas State and nine in the Camping World Bowl blowout loss to Notre Dame to close things out. Brock Purdy is back after throwing for 3,982 yards and 27 touchdowns, bombing away for an attack that came up with two touchdown pass or more in nine of the first 11 games and hit the 300-yard mark seven times. He can run, too – he was second on the team with 249 yards and eight scores – but the high-powered offense will keep on bombing away. Former star recruit Re-al Mitchell transferred to Temple, and the only other backups from last year’s team are walk-ons. Aidan Bouman and Hunter Dekkers were okay recruits who’ll need to be ready to go early on. CFN in 60 Video: Iowa State Cyclones Preview – Leading receiver Deshaunte Jones is gone, but junior Charlie Kolar might be the Big 12’s best tight end. He’s coming off a 51-catch, seven-touchdown season, and 6-7, 245-pound senior Chase Allen isn’t a bad second option. Tarique Milton averaged over 20 yards per catch, but the Cyclones need a few volume catchers to step up with Jones and La’Michael Pettway gone. Sophomore Sean Shaw caught five touchdown passes, and Landen Akers is a veteran in the system, but the nice recruits from last year’s class have to rise up, and 6-3, 200-pound JUCO transfer Xavier Hutchinson needs to become an instant factor. – The running game is effective enough to get by,but it has to work. Iowa State was 0-5 last year when it ran for fewer than 100 yards, and is 0-8 over the last two seasons when it can’t get there. 6-1, 205-pound Breece Hall stepped in as a true freshman for David Montgomery and led the way with 897 yards and nine touchdowns, turning it on over the second half of the season. He’ll be the all-purpose back – he made 23 grabs – and the workhorse at times, but junior Johnnie Lang and senior Kene Nwangwu are veterans with starting experience that can be worked into the mix. The O line, though, needs some work to make it all go. Four starters from the lend of last year are done, with only sophomore Trevor Downing returning to one guard spot. Junior Colin Newell will likely take over at center, and the cupboard isn’t bare to fill in the other spots, but it’s asking a lot to lead the Big 12 again in fewest sacks and tackles for loss allowed. COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS PREVIEW 2020: VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES OFFENSE 3 THINGS TO KNOW – Before getting going, few teams are going to be more fluid than Virginia Tech.Almost no one has dealt with the transfer portal more, and no one has had crazier things happen to its receiving corps. The Hokies finished 86th in the nation in total offense and averaged just under 31 points per game, but there are plenty of reasons for hope for a huge seasons, despite all the wild changes. Start with that receiving corps. Leading touchdown guy Damon Hazelton – coming up with eight scores – is now a Missouri Tiger, and the 16 combined 2019 catches from Hezekiah Grimsley and Phil Patterson are leaving the building. However, most of the other transfers leaving were reserves who hadn’t done much, and 6-3, 205-pound Evan Fairs is coming in from Kansas after making 28 career grabs. Leading receiver Tre Turner is back after making 34 grabs for 553 yards and four scores, and speedy Tayvion Robinson will do more after a good freshman season. Tight end Dalton Keene was taken in the third round by New England, but junior James Mitchell is back – he’s a solid deep threat. And all of the receivers have a rising star throwing their way. CFN in 60 Video: Virginia Tech Hokies Preview – Hendon Hooker flirted with the transfer portal before last year,came back, and took over the starting gig after the first month of the season. The 6-4, 228-pounder hit 61% of his passes for 1,555 yards and 13 touchdowns, but his big claim to fame was being careful with the ball – the two interceptions he threw in the loss to Virginia were his only two picks of the year. He also ran for five scores – he’s the franchise star. 6-4, 245-pound sophomore Quincy Patterson is a decent prospect battling former Oregon transfer Braxton Burmeister to be the main backup. – The transfer portal took away plenty of receivers,but it also brought the Hokies some terrific running backs – a must with leading rusher Deshawn McClease leaving early. 5-9, 205-pound grad transfer Khalil Herbert comes in from Kansas where he ran for 1,735 career yards and 14 scores. He’s ready to roll right away, but the instant eligibility of speedy Rutgers star Raheem Blackshear is still in question. Devastating as a runner or a receiver, Blackshear will eventually fill a variety of roles – he ran for 912 yards and six scores and caught 80 passes for 810 yards and six touchdowns in just over two seasons. Combine these two with 5-11, 182-pound sophomore Keshawn King – he was third on the team with 340 yards and two scores – and the Hokies have a nice backfield. They’ll all have a great-looking line to work behind. Three reserve options left through the transfer portal, but all five starters – all underclassmen last year – are expected to return including All-ACC performers tackle Christian Darrisaw and guard Lecitus Smith on the left side.
