She decided if she was hard to please that was distinctly a problem with him, not her. As far as she was concerned, it was. Though she had long since learned not to rely on anyone to please her. She took her own pleasures where she found them. A well placed shot. The wind in her hair. The sea-salt smell of her home. The sharp biting wind when she reached the top of the wall. People rarely made her happy.

for the past hour gwen had found herself staring listlessly up at the smooth expanse of ceiling that curved to an abrupt stop above her new headboard. the room was small but in a way that made them feel guarded and protected within the tight four walls instead of suffocated and trapped. in the room that wasn’t theirs, gwen found herself caught in limbo between a distant memory of home and a poor attempt at grasping the reality she now inhabited. she had swung off buildings and towers more times than they could count but never had gwen felt so helplessly suspended on a thread much thinner than a spidersweb. dread grew in the pit of her stomach and she forced herself up before it threatened to consume her whole. instead of moping the night away, she decided that a walk would clear her head.

as one would expect, a building full of spiders was eerily quiet at all times of day. their people were known to skitter around soundlessly so gwen couldn’t help but whip her head around at every elongated shadow in her periphery. just when she was convinced that they had found a secluded ledge along a window overlooking neuva york, a voice broke through the night. “ yeah, you think jumping dimensions gives you jet lag ? maybe that’s what it is. ” they turned to him with a yawn and a half grin. her blue eyes scanned miguel’s features as if looking for the answers of a test. she could never tell with him. stonier than most of them, it was difficult to read a spider who didn’t wear their heart on their sleeve. they were more alike than she’d like to admit. “ you too ? ” a teasing glint flashed across their eyes before gwen added. “ or is the no sleeping part of the whole vampire schtick ? ”

          there is always a choice,     a voice chimes in her head     [...]       but it never escapes her lips.     the words sit on the tip of her tongue,  burning like fire,   but she swallows it…   not wanting to start an argument that will never be finished.     if there is  one  thing the two of them share,   it is their  stubbornness.
