Moving Mountains - S/T (held by @cswappo of 20 Stories Falling) SURPRISE! I have a new “thing” here at VE. I’ve started reaching out to musicians from my and your favorite bands and asking them to take a selfie with their fav record and tell us a little about WHY it’s their favorite. First up is Colton Swapp from @20storiesfalling with his favorite album from @movmou. (Coming soon-ish is @nitemoves my buddy who bangs the drums in everyone’s favorite band, @tychomusic.) He writes: “This is my favorite record, and it’s a by band called Moving Mountains. This band has a few releases and they are all so incredible...but this one is an absolute gem in them all. It’s a more matured version of the band that I don’t think anyone really saw coming. It’s textured with beautiful ambient moments throughout the entire thing. I love the Singers vocals on this one cause he really showcases how beautiful and unique his voice is. He sings pretty low throughout the entire thing, which ends up really setting the tone for how this record plays. The sound of it is breathtaking in parts that will have you humming and singing along. The other thing about this one is that It just sounds exactly how I feel inside! It’s one of those records that I didn’t appreciate until I got it on vinyl. I find myself listening to this one over and over again. I wish I would have been into this band while they were really active. Check out Moving Mountains if you haven’t already. Today’s big review is of 20 Stories Falling - Existence. This band reached out to us months ago before we were well prepared to take on musicians’ submissions and turn them into something useful here for all of you to read. Fortunately, we stayed in touch and now that we’re publishing much more than just pics of our benevolent leader’s personal collection, we’re super excited to share this one with you. Good luck to the future winner! This album captivated me from the very first introductory song. This is billed as post-hardcore and there certainly are PH vibes, but it’s also safe to call the ambiance and use of space as post-rock influenced, and the vocals are crisp and clear like a lot of the Midwestern emo bands of 20 years ago (long before emo meant Hot Topic, etc.). If you like the songwriting and delivery of The Hotelier, the chimey and spacious atmosphere of bands like Explosions in the Sky or This Will Destroy You, and even the driving alternative rock of bands like Balance and Composure or Basement, you will absolutely love this band and this album. They don’t suffer from the overproduction of so many recent albums in these genres, and the vinyl pressing itself is both beautifully designed and well mastered. My partner, who is a sharp judge of derivative music liked this one so much he made sure to ask “we’re definitely keeping this right?!”.
