This week I did my fastest/farthest run yet. It was a 40 minute steady run with the usual 5 min warm up and 5 min cool down walks. I've done 40 and 50 mins runs before but at a much slower pace. While I couldn't keep the same pace throughout the 40 mins, I didn't stop running and I did fairly good in increasing my overall pace by about a minute. I also hit the 5k mark in just over 30 mins which is about 6 mins faster than my first race's time.
As hard as it is, working on this tabata-like running schedule, I really like to see results like that. I'm way more tired after each run but my legs feel a lot stronger and I can see the numbers get better on my shorter runs. I've never been in it for the speed but it's nice to know I can constantly improve my times and when it comes to the longer runs I'll be better prepared.
I've also been adding a bit of hill sprinting to the end of some runs. There's a foot path behind my house that it's quite steep and I'll often run down it and then sprint back up. I feel like dying at the end of it, specially since I do it after my regular run is over, but it feels great getting to the top. My usual running routes are quite hilly already but I've had a few friends suggesting I try hill sprints to build more muscle. Maybe one I'll try running up Mill Hill.
