I remember standing next to the Hugo Boss store in KLCC with C waiting for E to come, and me telling C how I think the suit on the model looks ill fitting.

“It’s by design,” C said.

The model was white, slender, blonde, with a face that would not be inaccurate to describe as interesting. 

I didn’t think much of it. We just stood there, talked about something else until E arrived, and then talked about a different something else.

Later -- much later -- after I arrived at the airport in Lisbon, I walked by a Hugo boss store and it was the exact same model. The exact same photo, which the same exact ill fitting suit.

When Facebook and Google can send targeted ads on the web not just to people in specific locations of a particular age and of a certain gender, but even more specific like -- people who like middle eastern food AND hip-hop music, I wonder why Hugo Boss* is using the same models in their campaign across different regions.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to hire regional models, and have regional photographers take photos in regional locations for the regional campaigns? 

It might be slightly more expensive -- I suppose -- in terms of money, but I think it’ll still be relatively cheaper considering everything else that it’ll bring about. The diversity in the campaign, for one. Increased brand recognition in the regions. And of course the growing of regional talents (models and photographers alike) that can be tapped on to do bigger and bolder projects later on.

What I’m not considering is -- and I don’t know this for sure --that maybe having a white face makes the brand feel more aspirational in Asia. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case, to be honest. But even if it were so, I’d say that that’s exactly why we need more regional faces in these campaigns.
