Elea denominata in epoca romana Velia, è un'antica polis della Magna Grecia.

Le origini di Velia sono legate alla battaglia di Alaia, in cui vide scontrarsi tre diverse popolazioni: focei, etruschi e cartaginesi.

La felice posizione geografica di Elea – situata su un promontorio a picco sul mare con due insenature che offrivano riparo dalle navi e dai venti e il territorio interno impervio – la rese molto forte.

Fu governata dalle buone leggi volute dal filosofo Parmenide.

Grazie a questo filosofo, nativo di Elea, si formò la cosiddetta “scuola eleatica” che influenzò molto il pensiero greco.

Uno degli allievi più importanti della scuola fu Zenone che molti considerano “padre della matematica di precisione”.
