And that is the final Pluribus. A slightly longer episode than we've been getting, and quite a few emotional points within. It's not just different philosophies but even just fundamentally different personalities keeping Manousos and Carol from agreeing, and when it eventually comes to a head Carol just says fuck it and goes and lives her lesbian fantasy life with Zosia. It's a good scene but you can tell there's a degree to which it still just isn't doing anything for Carol, frankly I wonder if fulfilment is even really something she'd ever be able to achieve. We do then learn that the hivemind actually are trying to forcefully convert Carol by getting some stem cells from her frozen eggs, which gives her an actual time limit, and I gotta be real I don't know why she doesn't just object lol? Her taking offence to that and then getting back with Manousos, yeah sure I follow, that tracks. The time limit aspect, I'm less sure about. They'll do what you ask Carol, they'll do what makes you happy. Tell them to stop the process and destroy your eggs. Yeah it's a tough call but you value your individuality enough, fuck joining them. I don't like doing the cinemasins ding plot brain moment but I think if you're introducing stakes that seem like they should be easily resolved without a second thought that is weird. But for our season finale it does create a rift between Carol and the hivemind that hadn't otherwise been there in a minute, and leaves us in an interesting spot narratively. Excited to see how season 2 follows up on this.
And then yeah, that's Pluribus. For a while at least. 8/10 from me. I just think this is a compelling sci-fi drama, plain and simple. The world setting creates a lot of interesting moods for our characters to go through and for how few characters technically exist in this setting they do a good job capturing a spectrum of human reactions to such an event. Good shit.
A Very Happy Xmas to everyone celebrating! :)
