I have friends that I only get to see every few years. And every time we meet, we go deep for a day or two -- I learn a lot about their lives -- but then I leave for one or two years, and the people tangential to their lives -- their friends and significant others -- get frozen in my mind exactly the way they were when I first them,

Recently, I met someone in Berlin who introduced himself as the boyfriend of someone who used to be my friend D’s girlfriend. And I remember in my head thinking -- no, she’s D’s girlfriend, even though it’s been two years since I’d met her. Is Elliot still the fire spinning guy? Is Zack still doing his masters and commuting from Pankow? 

I don’t know what I’m trying to get at with this, except that life is not a TV series, and these characters -- I mean people -- have lives that keep going whether or not they’re being observed.
