[Fanfic] Summer Solstice - Chapter 6: Unexpected Visitor
Chapter 6: Unexpected Visitor
When the last period's bell sounded, Nichkhun quickly bid farewell to his friends and ushered Victoria towards the school’s front gates. Not a single word was exchanged between the two after they boarded the awaiting vehicle.
During the ride home, Nichkhun occasionally glanced over at Victoria to see what she was doing. Not noticing Nichkhun’s surreptitious glances, Victoria continued to stare out of her window at the passing landscape. With a clear view of her side profile; Nichkhun had to admit, albeit silently, that her delicate features provided her face with an unmistakable charm.
Upon recalling the overly warm welcome, which she had received at school, Nichkhun muttered under his breath, “No wonder those wolves all wanted to get their paws on you.” Having heard Nichkhun’s hushed voice, Victoria turned to face him as she asked, “Did you say something to me?”
Caught off guard by her question, Nichkhun quickly looked away and countered tersely, “Why would I say anything to you?” Finding his attitude a bit annoying, Victoria replied by saying, “Oh sorry, I thought you were talking to me; turns out that you were only talking to yourself again.” Puzzled by her response, Nichkhun snapped himself back around to face her as he asked, “And what’s that supposed to mean?” With a clearly insincere smile, Victoria replied coolly, “I meant that even though you’re surrounded by people all day; you have this tendency to talk only to yourself.”
Displeased by her seemingly relaxed demeanor, Nichkhun gruffly demanded that she stop smiling like an idiot. Victoria’s smile instantly disappeared as she exclaimed loudly, “I’d rather be an idiot than a crazy person who talks to themselves all the time.”
Locking eyes with her, Nichkhun asked incredulously, “Who are you to call me crazy?” Not flinching, Victoria countered by saying, “I’m not a psychiatrist but if it quacks like a duck and waddles like a duck, then…”
Cutting her off mid-sentence, Nichkhun warned, “Finish that sentence and see what happens.” Deciding that it might be best to hold her tongue, Victoria shrugged her shoulders and looked away.
After a few minutes of awkward silence, Nichkhun suddenly pretended as though nothing had happened and asked, “What do you think of the school?” Not sure if she ought to respond, Victoria paused slightly before she finally said, “The school’s very nice and the professors seem to be very distinguished. But, I think that your friends are very troublesome.”
Intrigued by her response, Nichkhun asked her to clarify why she had made such an assessment about his friends. After giving it some thought, Victoria explained by saying, “Well you know your friend, the one who’s not the tallest but also not the shortest, he kept trying to carry my book bag all day. And your other friend, the shortest one; he must have asked me for my phone number nearly fifty times.”
As he listened to her explanation, Nichkhun wondered where he had been when all of this was taking place. Before he could make any response to the proffered information, Victoria continued to say, “Worst of all was Taecyeon. He grabbed my hand a few times today and even asked if I’ve ever dated anyone as handsome as him.”
Shaking his head, Nichkhun said exasperatedly, “That guy is always like that.” Nodding her head to acknowledge Nichkhun’s statement, Victoria added, “He must have some kind narcissistic prince complex. Anyways, just so you know, if he tries to hold my hand again I’m going to punch him.” Nichkhun laughed as he imagined how Taecyeon would react to getting punched by a girl.
Despite finding the scenario somewhat entertaining, it suddenly dawned on Nichkhun that out of all of the guys, Victoria had only managed to remember Taecyeon’s name. He wondered if that was an indication of her slight interest in the overbearing playboy.
Glancing over towards Victoria, Nichkhun then wondered why he was wasting his time thinking about her interests. Thinking that it would be best to be less involved in her personal matters, Nichkhun made no attempt to continue their conversation.
After a short while, Victoria and Nichkhun arrived at home and made their way to the main house. Nichkhun’s grandparents greeted them as they entered. Since they were interested in hearing all about Victoria’s day, Nichkhun’s grandparents sequestered her to the sitting area. Nichkhun’s grandparents were pleased to hear that the day had gone well and were glad that she was adjusting so well to her new life.
Over the next couple of weeks, Victoria worked diligently to review all of the course work that she had missed. During her review, Victoria realized just how poorly her old school had prepared her for the academic rigors of her new school’s curriculum. Hoping to not disappoint her benefactors, Victoria paid very little attention to anything but her studies.
Since she was so focused on her schoolwork; Victoria rarely attempted to make any new acquaintances at school. As a result of this, she found herself with no other friends except those within Nichkhun’s social circle. Although, she was becoming more comfortable with his group of friends, Victoria started to notice that Nichkhun was harassing her more often than not.
There were numerous occasions when he would burst into her room to reprimand her for things, which were not her fault. She often wondered if he had taken up a new hobby of finding new ways to harass her. Hoping to minimize the friction between them; Victoria endeavored to stay out of his way both at school and at home. Unbeknownst to Victoria, her attempts to avoid him were the root cause of Nichkhun’s continued harassment. Nichkhun seemed to find it more difficult to go about his daily routine of television watching, game playing, surfing the net and hanging out, knowing that Victoria was holed up in her room studying.
With the passing of each day, Nichkhun started to feel as though he had developed an itch that could only be alleviated by pestering her. He often thought that it was good that she was around since he now had a life sized doll to mess with. In spite of Nichkhun’s interferences, Victoria’s determination to study finally paid off when she earned the highest marks on the mid-term exams in nearly all of her classes. Although, she was happy that she had done so well, Victoria knew that her test results would create problems for Nichkhun at home..
After they received the last set of exam results, Victoria said to Nichkhun, “I won’t show anyone my test results.” Looking at her with a slight disdain, Nichkhun asked, “Why not?” After a short pause, she finally replied, “Because they might get mad at you.” Shaking his head, Nichkhun said in a clearly unconcerned tone, “They’ll get mad either way. Since you did well, you should show them.”
Sensing that he did not want to discuss the matter any further, Victoria dropped the subject. When the last bell rung; Taecyeon approached Nichkhun and Victoria to suggest that they have dinner at the seafood restaurant by the pier. Taecyeon reasoned that Victoria’s stellar test scores were accomplishments that should be rewarded with a nice meal.
To down play Victoria’s achievements, Nichkhun stated indifferently, “It’s not like she’s smart. Anyone could get those test results if they locked themselves up in their room and worshiped those textbooks like they were the bible.”
Not wanting to fight with him, Victoria ignored Nichkhun’s comment and instead asked Taecyeon, “Is it expensive at that restaurant? I’ve been saving up my allowance, so I might have enough if it’s not too expensive.” With a broad smile on his face, Taecyeon said, “Don’t worry about that kind of thing. It’ll be my treat since you did so well.”
Dumbfounded, Nichkhun stood in silence as he listened to the two discuss their dinner plans. Not taking kindly to being ignored, Nichkhun interjected into the conversation by asking Victoria, “Who said you can go?” Giving his friend a strange look, Taecyeon asked Nichkhun, “When did you become her guardian?”
Glancing over at Taecyeon, Nichkhun replied, “I never said that I’m her guardian. But apparently, she’s forgotten that she has to ask for permission to go out on a school night.” Realizing that he was right, Victoria quickly said, “Oh that’s right. I don’t think I can go today. Taecyeon, can we go another day?”
Although he was feeling slightly dejected, Taecyeon replied jokingly, “Sure we can go another day. Just let me know when we’ll be going on our first date.” Startled by his response, Victoria quickly corrected him by saying, “It’s not a date! We’re just two friends going out for a meal.” With a wide grin on his face, Taecyeon simply said, “Same difference.” Having witnessed enough, Nichkhun gruffly said to Victoria, “If you are done flirting, let’s go.” Knowing that it would be useless to argue that she was not flirting, Victoria simply bid Taecyeon goodbye before she turned to follow Nichkhun off campus.
During dinner that night, the mid-term examination results were discussed in great detail. While Nichkhun was lectured for his lack of effort and mediocre marks; Victoria was praised for her hard work and lauded repeatedly. As dinner was coming to an end, Victoria asked Nichkhun in a hushed voice, “Are you okay?” Without looking at her, Nichkhun countered by asking, “Why wouldn’t I be okay?”
With an audible sigh, Victoria said, “If you’re not okay, you can tell me.” Tilting his head to look over at her; Nichkhun’s expression slightly softened as he said reassuringly, “Trust me, I’m fine. But thanks for the concern.” Victoria smiled discreetly as she acknowledged his response with a quick nod of her head. After dinner, Victoria, Nichkhun and his grandparents assembled in the family room to watch television. Before Victoria had a chance to take her seat, on the sofa closest to the door, Nichkhun’s grandmother handed her a small velvet box. Upon seeing Victoria’s confused expression, Nichkhun’s grandmother explained by saying, “It’s a reward for your hard work.”
Without attempting to accept the gift, Victoria shook her head and said, “I can’t accept this, you’ve all done so much for me.” Using a bit of coercion, Nichkhun’s grandfather lamented to his wife, “Dear, it seems like our Victoria really doesn’t like your gesture. You shouldn’t make her uneasy with that little insignificant gift.” Knowing that she did not have a choice in the matter, Victoria resigned herself to accepting the gift. Holding out her hands to receive the gift, Victoria said, “Thank you, I’ll treasure this for as long as I live.” Nichkhun’s grandmother beamed with happiness as she urged Victoria to open the box.
Doing as asked, Victoria carefully opened the velvet box and stared wide-eyed at the gold necklace accompanied by small heart pendant. Tears welled up in her eyes as she looked back over at Nichkhun’s grandmother. Without saying a single word, Victoria hugged the elder Mrs. Horvejkul tightly as she shed tears of joy. When he saw Victoria’s reaction to the gift, Nichkhun smiled and thought to himself; “She’s such a cry baby sometimes. Imagine crying that much over jewelry.” When she finally composed herself, Victoria repeatedly thanked Nichkhun’s grandparents for the heartwarming gift.
After watching a few programs, everyone retired to their respective rooms for the night. Before she prepared for bed, Victoria looked around her room for the best location to place her gift. Once she had carefully put away the necklace, Victoria washed up and went to bed. She had not slept for very long when her sleep was suddenly interrupted by the sound of light knocking on her door. Still groggy, Victoria asked in a sleep laden voice, “Who is it?” The person behind the door replied in a hushed tone, “Miss Victoria, its Butler Yang. I’m here to inform you that there’s someone here to see you.”
Victoria looked at the alarm clock beside her bed, which read 1:00 a.m. and wondered who would visit at such a late hour. As to not disturb the family, Victoria quickly got out of bed and followed Butler Yang downstairs. After he opened the front door, Butler Yang pointed towards the man who stood at the outer edge of the front lawn.
After she apologized to Butler Yang for the late night disturbance, Victoria cautiously approached the mysterious visitor. Since the visitor had his back turned to her, Victoria tapped him on the shoulder and asked, “Were you looking for me?”
As he turned around to face her, the visitor replied, “You know that I’ve been looking for you.” Horrified to see the familiar face, Victoria stumbled backwards as she asked in bewilderment, “What do you want from me now?”
Having witnessed the exchange and Victoria’s petrified expression, Butler Yang wondered if he should inform the elder Mr. Horvejkul about the incident. Worried for Victoria’s safety, Butler Yang decided that it would be best to remain there to further assess the situation.
