MBTI & Up Series (x) Bruce Balden: INFJ
Some of the Britons who are subjects in the long running Up documentary series. The first installment, Seven Up (1964) and 28 Up (1985) are the two entries ranked together on the New York Times list of the 1,000 Best Films.
Seven Up 1964) was directed by Paul Almond, who was born in Montreal, and had 47 director credits, from a 1955 Canadian tv episode, to a tv documentary in 2007. Almost all of his credits have been on tv.
28 Up (1985) is the longest entry in the series, and was directed by Michael Apted. Mike was born in Buckinghamshire, England and has 78 director credits, from an episode of a 1963 documentary series on the telly, to the latest entry in the series, 63 Up, now in pre-production. He has directed every entry since the second, 7 Plus Seven (1971). Michael’s first feature was in 1972, and his other entry on the NY Times list is Coal Miner’s Daughter. His other notable films are Gorillas in the Mist and The World is Not Enough with Pierce Brosnan, and he also directed an episode of Ray Donovan, and nine episodes of Masters of Sex. He frequently works in tv and in documentaries.
Seven Up (1964) and 28 Up are ranked together as one of the New York Times 1.000 Best Films. They are part of a series chronicling the lives of ordinary Brits, checking in every seven years. The first entry, Seven Up, does not have any posters, as it was first shown on the telly, so the dvd box set for the series is presented. It is a puzzle why only the two films are ranked and not the entire series.

They’ll insist there’s something pure about the documentary and impure about movies, but that’s absolute bollocks.

"I don’t think I was half as clever as I was told I was. I think unfortunately I grew up against a background of people of pretty average intelligence. I don’t think I went to a school that was full of bright people. . . . I think I went to university expecting to be something of a genius and found that this wasn’t the case at all."
