The New Perimenopause: An Evidence-Based Guide to Surviving the Zone of Chaos and Feeling Like Yourself Again (Mary Claire Haver, 2026)
"My mother fractured her hip at age eighty-seven and underwent a hip replacement. She never walked again.
I was shocked to discover that she had never been screened for osteoporosis.
No one had ever talked to her about bone density or warned her she was at risk.
She wasn’t told—nor were most women in her generation—that she could do something to protect the structural integrity of her bones so they could carry her through the final decades of her life with strength and dignity.
All she was ever told about her health was to eat less, take up less space, and weigh less. In other words, to “stay small.”
The system failed her. And it nearly failed me, too.
In all my years of medical training, no one ever said it’s critical that you teach your patients to preserve and even increase bone density.
No one emphasized how essential it is to instruct women on maintaining muscle mass to avoid sarcopenia, a progressive decline in strength and function that often travels alongside osteoporosis and independently leads to disability.
Strength and function weren’t part of the conversation. Frailty and hip fractures were things we were instructed to document, not to prevent.
And here’s the part that still shocks me: My mother’s story isn’t unique. It’s tragically common."

Saturn's north pole !
The hexagon is nearly 30,000 km (20,000 miles) wide. This is large enough that two Earths could fit inside the storm with room to spare.
It is a standing atmospheric wave created by a powerful jet stream that wraps around the pole. Winds along its edges can exceed 300 km/h (about 220 mph).
At the very center of the hexagon lies a deep, dark polar vortex that extends hundreds of kilometers down into Saturn's atmosphere.

raw-dogging Portuguese to watch this show has been such a ride
during that episode (6x05) I chuckled incredulously when he mentioned that he and another character went out for a coffee but got a beer instead, calling that beer a "chopp"
in my Belgian neck of the woods we also drink many "chopes", and I'd always assumed that the word was borrowed from German, simply because it sounds German
so I was surprised to hear it being used in Brazil — they're not Germany's neighbor like we are! they were never invaded by the wehrmacht! why are they sounding German in the tropics?
so I googled the origin of the word and it indeed comes from "schoppe" in Alsatian, a Germanic dialect from Alsace, a region that now belongs to the French, but no doubt the Germans will come back for it one day, with a vengeance
this made me wonder: wait a minute, how many Nazis fled to Brazil after the war? did they import the word "schoppe" or something?
so I googled that too, and Brazil was indeed their #2 destination in Latin America after Argentina
but the reason why they went to Brazil was because large German communities were already long-established there
I mean look at this city called Blumenau, it's straight up a German postcard lmao, and they even throw the second largest Oktoberfest there (after Munich):
so "chopp" was not a Nazi import, but it sure was a German one
here's what Gemini had to say about it:
"While the Portuguese word for beer is cerveja (from the Latin cerevisia), chopp refers specifically to draught beer—fresh beer served from a keg, usually with a thick layer of foam. It entered Brazil via German immigrants in the 19th century. Interestingly, it likely took a detour through the French chope (meaning a large beer glass), which was also borrowed from the German Schoppen."
btw this post is the reason I can't delete my blog
do you think I can talk to irl normies about how interesting it is that you can order chopes in São Paulo? imagine the blank stares

The Global Story: How did prediction markets get so big?
"On prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket people are placing sometimes huge wagers on questions ranging from the sublime ('will Jesus Christ return by the end of the year?') to the very serious ('will the US invade Iran?').
Gambling is restricted across many US states but prediction markets are not classified as gambling.
Their rapid rise over recent years speaks - some say - to an increasing nihilism among young men in particular, who feel they may as well try to profit from world events they cannot control.
Supporters say prediction markets are a smart way to make money. Critics say they are enabling insider trading.
So what is the truth behind their rise? We speak to senior business journalist at the BBC, Mitch Labiak."
