Sonic X episodes 30, 31 and 32 complete, woo! And now I’m done for a while bc :)
Episode 30′s mostly just an action sequence aboard the Egg Carrier that was completely fine and watchable, though it also features Tails’ big development moment from Sonic Adventure - in this case by way of him stopping a missile. Honestly, it’s weird. That arc about gaining independence and self confidence works in Sonic Adventure because Tails actually did overly rely on Sonic before that point. But in Sonic X, Tails is for the most part pretty independent and more than capable of doing stuff without following behind Sonic, so him telling us about how he can’t keep relying on Sonic feels... redundant? And a little bit regressive? It doesn’t bother me that much but it’s definitely an area where the adaptation falls a bit flat.
Episode 31 puts an end to most of the other plot points and character arcs at play in the story before Perfect Chaos’ appearance - so Gamma gets to go kill his brothers, Big gets to find Froggy (happened last episode actually but shhh), Sonic gets to fight the Egg Viper, stuff like that. Some resolutions and some setups - honestly does its job just fine as a bit of an interim episode in that regard, I enjoyed it.
And then episode 32 sees the appearance of Perfect Chaos, and the return of Super Sonic to stop him. And honestly, it’s pretty fun! Perfect Chaos’ sheer destructive capabilities are really well established and the setting is incredibly tense - there are a lot of shots of just the people who are gonna die if we can’t get this thing taken care of. It’s a much better atmosphere for Super Sonic to appear than last time, and when he does appear he makes a way stronger showing too - more actual screentime, more action, more of him getting results, it’s pretty fun! And it’s helped by the actual best animation Sonic X has had up to this point as well. Very happy with it all around.
And that’s the Adventure adaptation. It’s perfectly serviceable. Weaker individual episodes than what season 1 often had on offer, but the overarching narrative is fairly strong despite its truncated length and entire shift in medium. Plus they don’t really do anything with Chris this arc, which we love because fuck Chris lmao. No clue when I’ll return to watching this show but I’m looking forward to Shadow and the SA2 adaptation and I’m not looking forward to seeing Chris steal Amy’s most pivotal scene in that entire game. Gotta love it.
