TEST SHOTS 1- 4/7/17
2807QCA Illustrative Studio Techniques
For this test shoot for TASK 1- Paper Still Life- I wanted to get as experimental as i could get.
The task called for 2 main approaches;
Either make something and use the light to tell a story about the paper object
OR
use the paper but experiment more with the lighting and use the light as the main visual component to set mood and tel the story/ narrative for the task
I decided to make several art sculptures out of paper;
with art influences ranging from abstract, minimalist and surrealist
I found this test shoot to be really interesting as I found I lit each still life work differently and took a very varied approach to HOW and WHY i lit them the way i did. It all depended on the texture, context and nature of my paper objects/ artworks-- with the visual narrative that i was trying to portray.
I wanted to utilize light to be complimentary to each still life/ paper art concept.
at the time I was inspired by a lot of ideas- and it is only in post production that I can see where my base idea was- in terms of the object and the lighting style I used-- from that I did relatively minimal post editing- (Curves, Contrast, Clarity, Brightness/ Shadows etc.) just to give more emphasis to the strong hard lighting that I used in all my shots.
But all of them are varied in terms of intensity, light positioning, light fall off etc.
this variation and experimentation is essential- as you do not see what has or has not been successful until you go back and review, analyse, select and edit your images.
I decided to name each paper still life to give them some more context and to provide insight with what my inspirations were when i was making these artworks and deciding how to light/ illuminate them; and also what angle, perspective and aperture I was going to use in order to make a successful still life image.
