Hermann wears a big puffy parka for two (2) reasons.

1) He’s really not great at retaining his own body heat, and the Shatterdome is cold and drafty (It doesn’t help that Newton’s Kaiju specimen require cold temperature storage and the seals on the containers leak around the aging seals.

2) He likes to look more physically intimidating, big in a way his height doesn’t convey—broad shoulders type. It’s hard being the scrawny scientist with a limp and a cane in the same facility as the absolute jock/military Jaeger pilots.

…And it’s absolutely not because Newton likes the parka too. That’s purely coincidental.
