♣ - a fading memory

29N’s optics come online, though his visual feed is messed up… he gets a dizzying overlay of five feeds, out of sync… his visual processor starts to resolve it. Standing is a bad idea, but he finds he can’t do it anyway - his frame won’t move. Yes… it will, but he is restrained… and drained… His Spark hurts. His optics offline again, and now his gyros must be miscalibrated. A horrible vertigo hits him as he feels his frame moving. He is big, filling up the lab…. he is in a lab… the feedback from his proprioception sensors places him all over the room, balancing on his feet and being prodded to move. No…. the feedback fades and his optics flicker back online, resolved into one image again, his own point of view, a different angle from before, looking up at the ceiling, and his frame is still restrained. He struggles and sits up enough to peer past his shoulder plating, at five Vehicons lined up and marching out of the lab. They naturally look just like any other drones, save for their pristine finishes, yet he knows something about them. Somehow… he just feels like they are his somehow, and like they know him too, better than his usual comrades. He wants to go be with them. The restraints open on his arms and legs, and he is waved unceremoniously out of the lab. He hurries to catch up to the five Vehicons and find out who they are.

"Today is a day some Earthlings celebrate the male that created and/or raised them. What do you think about Primus?"

"Um, I’m not the best person to ask. I never really learned much about Primus, but I know he’s real, and Cybertron is made of him. He’s lives in the Well of AllSparks, and Energon comes from him. And I know that he’s trying to fix himself right now, even though we never got to use the Omega Lock. It will take a long time. I hope he’s all right…

I think he must be, and I know the AllSpark is out there somewhere. One time, a while after my clones were killed, I was having a really hard time with the idea of them being all right, since they were split Sparks, and the AllSpark is lost, and we were so far from Cybertron, and it all just seemed so wrong. I got my Energon rations, and once I had finished them, I knew my clones had joined the AllSpark, wherever it was. I really can’t explain it, but it was what I needed, and Energon comes from Primus, so I think maybe they wanted me to know they were all right, or he did? I know it sounds silly.

Anyway, I’m no philosopher, so what do I know?

Why do Eradicons have such strange-looking jet modes? They don't look like any Earth jets, but aren't you all supposed to be disguised?

They look like that because that is the jet mode they are stuck with. None of them were originally fliers, and their T-cogs are still designed to scan and recreate ground vehicles. They are just regular Vehicons with the wheels taken off and wings put on, because air superiority is one of the Decepticons’ main strategies and they needed even more fliers. I’m guessing Shockwave never bothered to change all the systems necessary for different transformations because the amount of taking apart and rebuilding required for the first generation would have used time and resources he would rather devote to his other experiments. Besides, it just wasn’t necessary. Ground-based units or real Seekers do any preliminary scouting that requires disguises, and then Eradicons bridge in and destroy whatever needs destroying. If you look at their alt-mode, you can tell that they are cars with wings, and you can also see what all the Vehicons’ Cybertronian car modes looked like. Is it weird to admit I like our Earth car modes better? They look sleeker and more intimidating.

Have you ever considered switching sides or going neutral?

*rotates shoulder wheels uncomfortably* Not really… Well, switching sides, definitely not. But hmm. A very long time ago, one of my clones got it into his head that he wanted to go and be a space pirate. I have no idea where he even got that notion, since he was only eighty or ninety maybe, and had been created aboard the ship. Maybe being born in space…? I don’t know. When he died in his first battle, besides feeling like I was dying too, I felt his regrets. Nothing specific, no words, just that he really didn’t want to be there, and it was like a little piece of me didn’t want to be here anymore either. When I woke up in the infirmary, I felt like quitting. But they cleared me for duty and I went and logged the inventory and damage reports. They’d already recovered his useable parts, and I made sure they’d be ready if anyone else got hurt. And it made me not want to quit anymore. Does that seem weird? I guess I did think about going neutral, if that’s the same as quitting, and they probably wouldn’t even know if I just didn’t come back from a hazardous mission. Vehicons do slip away sometimes. But I would know. I don’t do much, and I’m replaceable, but I make sure mechs can find what they need, and I remember whose parts they were, even if my reports don’t show it. Would my replacement remember? I never called it anything, or thought about it, but I guess you could say I do this because it’s my duty.

And I am not cut out for piracy.

How come there aren't any femme Vehicons?

There are some, they just look exactly like all the other Vehicons.

Approximately one in thirteen Cybertronians is a femme, and I think it goes all the way back to the Thirteen Primes, because of Solus. I know in humans and a lot of other species that have their genders involved with reproducing, the ratio is closer. Cybertronians don’t even have gender in that way, but femmes process data in a fundamentally different way. I’m no scientist, so I am not sure what exactly the differences are. I can tell you that mechs and femmes can both look like just about anything, build-wise, depending on their frame type, so never assume.

I do not think that one in thirteen ratio is maintained among Vehicons though, because with all the cloning and Spark splitting and so on, the numbers probably got messed up, depending on who was used in what procedures, and how many copies were made. I could look it up, but honestly it doesn’t really make a difference.

So are there dead Vehicons all over the place on Earth? Doesn't that kind of blow your cover? And what if MECH found them?

No. No there are not. Even when we have to make a full retreat, Soundwave logs the coordinates of all incidents, and sends recovery teams via ground bridge. Aside from avoiding the notice of native life forms, they also do it to recover everyone’s parts.

And the recovery teams also rescue survivors. Don’t forget that there are often survivors.
