Stopping Power: It’s Importance in Self Defense

Self defense is a driving reason why many come through the doors of our guns and ammo San Diego store.

We’re constantly asked, day in and day out, what round can give the greatest stopping power. It’s funny that term is used so frequently but many can’t define the parameters of what constitutes a bullet’s stopping power. Is it the bullet’s velocity? Expansion? Maybe it’s the simple act of crime deterrence? Regardless of the details, what matters most is that you’re safe from danger at the end of the day.

The Caliber Debate

Surely, many will think a .22 LR gives ample power to deter would-be assailants from threatening your or your loved one’s lives or property. With that said, people continue to tout their caliber of choice as the best defense caliber. They cite all the data and round performance analysis to back their claims. However, the fact of the matter is that many have faced lethal blows from lesser projectiles.

A well placed shot with any round at a vital point on the body can be enough to slow down, if not fully stop, a threat. But how many gun owners actually get to that point of discharging their weapon in self-defense?

True Stopping Power

Without citing any exact numbers, let’s say a hundred armed citizens actually find themselves in a situation where they fear for their lives. Of that hundred, 60 to 90 would be deterred simply by the sheer act of showing their firearm. Of the remaining 10, half would discharge their weapon and miss their target completely.

In the 95 instances where the gun wasn’t discharged, how useful was a caliber’s performance in stopping power? It’s clear then we should factor in to consideration that a simple visual of a firearm is a notable enough deterrence. In all seriousness, the data and bullet performance do matter in the 5 remaining situations where a firearm was successfully discharged in self defense. We believe strongly that this small possibility of a real and imminent threat to your life is what everyone should prepare for.
