Interview with 2CellosJr [English]
This interview was done in partnership with the 2cellosargentina we are thankful for the availability and kindness of Emil and Dariel to answer us. We hope you like it.
2CELLOSARGENTINA
- Why you start to play cello and no another instrument? like the guitar, for example.
-We started to play the cello because since we were very little we used to listen to our grandfather practice and perform (our grandfather is a classical cellist). Our mother took us to every single concert he played in. It was our dream to perform on the cello since a very young age. Our grandfather was our main inspiration.
- Why they do covers of songs that only play 2Cellos? Why don't play songs of others bands like Apocalyptica, The Piano Guys, or Rasputina?
-We knew about both Stjepan and Luka before they became 2CELLOS and we have always admired their style and technical abilities. There are very few cellists in the world who are able to masterfully interweave style, technique, and sound in the way that Luka and Stjepan are able to. So we have admired them more than anybody else. Their school and style of playing is very similar to how we were trained. When we discovered their “rock” covers in early 2013, we got inspired and quickly ordered their sheet music for covers. We were very much inclined towards 2CELLOS because there was also two of us and we both played cello.
- In the future, you guys want to make an album with covers like 2Cellos? Or they want to make an album with their own songs like Apocalyptica? We actually would like to do a little bit of both… We both enjoy arranging popular modern music for cello and trying to make it sound like the original as much as possible. However, It would be interesting to also compose a piece one day.
-What kind of music they want to play in the future? How decided both what songs wants to play? We really just find music as we go along. One day we can be listening to a song on TV and we notice that it will work for two cellos. At this point, we look up the song on the internet and listen to it many times and eventually, we can start playing it together.

- We want to know more about Emil and Dariel… when you start to play cello? And why you choose cello?
-We both started to play when we were 4 years old and we chose the cello because we loved listening to our grandfather perform. The sound of the cello is also incredibly beautiful…it is the closest to the human voice and in terms of all string instruments, the cello has the broadest range of pitch from lowest to highest.
- How old are you, and where you come from?
-We are 16 (Emil) and 13 (Dariel) and we were born in Florida. Our background is Eastern European (Russian).
- Do you have other brothers, or sisters? If yes, they play something too?
-Yes, we have a younger sister and a cousin who is growing up with us. Both girls play the cello and study classical ballet.
- And about you family? Your parents or someone else play too? They support you?
-My mother comes from a musical family of many generations. My grandfather is a classical cellist and our teacher and our grandmother is a choir conductor by profession. Our parents support us tremendously in everything we do and are very happy for us.
- What it’s your favorite style? Classical, rock, pop?
-We really love all kinds of music and enjoy playing it all tremendously. Our background, however, is in classical music.
-And what about the relation with the fans? It’s something did you ever imagine?
-We never imagined that we would have so many wonderful people who are supporting us and writing such nice things to us and about us. These warm messages give us the inspiration to work even harder every day. Every song we perform is for our fans and always with our fans in mind. The support from our fans is coming from all over the world and that is very special to us.
- And tell me! Who makes the invitation to play with 2cellos? And what did you feel about this?
-One day, we got an email from Stjepan and Luka asking for our phone number so that they could reach us. At first, we thought it was a prank and we did not believe that it was true. But the email address matched the one on their website and we realized that it was real and the beginning of our dream was about to come true. We were extremely honored by their invitation and could barely believe that it actually happened.
- What did you feel when you play with them? Something change about your routine [ shows… cellogirls] ?
-We felt so much energy on stage with them and it felt like we had played with them our whole lives. They are not only some of the best cellists in history, but they are extraordinarily kind and nice people. Playing with them on stage had to be the greatest experience we ever had. In April of 2013, when we were called “2CELLOS Junior” by 2CELLOS we knew we had to live up to that name and that we had to make them proud of us. This gave us the incentive and the strength to work even harder and practice even longer hours…They made us feel extremely welcome and the atmosphere that they created for us was unforgettable and extremely generous. We must recognize that there are not too many famous artists who would be willing to be so gracious and invite two young musicians to share the stage with them. We will forever be indebted to Stjepan and Luka.
- What’s your perspective for the future? [shows, record something from Liakhovetski brothers or play again with 2CELLOS]?
-Our perspective for the future is to keep recording videos and playing for our fans. We do not know what the future holds for us, but there is nothing in this world that would mean more to us than to perform with 2CELLOS again.
- We can wait to see something new from 2cellosJr?
-Currently we are working on many of our own new covers which we will be recording and sharing with our fans.
