2 Corinthians 7 - Distress that drives us to God.
“I know I distressed you greatly with my letter. Although I felt awful at the time, I don’t feel at all bad now that I see how it turned out. The letter upset you, but only for a while. Now I am glad - not that you were upset, but that you were jarred into turning things around. You let the distress bring you to God, not drives you from Him. The result was all gain, no loss. Distress that drives us to God does that. It turns us around. It gets us back in the way of salvation. We never regret that kind of pain. But those who let distress drive them away from God are full of regrets, end up on a deathbed of regrets. (2 Corinthians 7:8-10)”
Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran are used to be the couriers of the narcotic drugs. They were executed in Indonesia because of that reason. They stayed in the prison for several years. We believe that for the first time they were being arrested, they were feeling distress. However, according to their story - especially Andrew Chan, he putted all his distress in the prison to Jesus. He brought his whole heart to Jesus. Until one time Chan asked for his freedom from the prison. But God said to him, I will give you a freedom, not just from this prison, but also from this world life. This freedom will be your eternal life. Then what did he do when he knew the answer of God? Did he go away from God? Did he mad at God? No. Never. He, just the opposite, became much closer to God. Even he became a preacher in the prison. He was preaching and also learning about God’s Words. Until the day of the execution, Chan and all his 6 friends, keep praising God with singing ‘Amazing Grace’ song.
How wonderful is the story? Yup. Become a Christian doesn’t mean we are free from any problems that make us feel distress. For example, problem in family or friendship, problem at school about the assignment or examination. Any problem that we have, sometimes make us feel like we want to turn our life from God. But, we need to know that we have God, we have our salvation. We have to believe that through Jesus, we will be given a freedom from the pain that we had. So, just come closer to Him, ask Him for the answers of our distress and we will all gain and never loss.
