Went to Playgrounds The Art Department festival for creatives in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Where I was inspired by Tomm Moore's talk and they also had a screening of his film Wolfwalkers which I went to see in the evening with my friend Els from howlingriot . Such a great movie! Here is a little fanart of the characters Robyn Goodfellowe and her little bird of prey, Merlyn.
Still from an experimental short film I made for uni earlier this year

Do 3D artists need to be any good at 2D?!
I get this asked of me all the time in a defiant gesture of the students I teach.
I tell them "yes, of course you do" this generally suffices their curiosity and I don't need to explain myself any more. But I feel that I should explain myself anyway.
2D is one of the most important skills of a 3D modeller. 3D artists require 2D images as references - True, you may not be the one making the concept art, but you'll be using it.
But if you don't know how to draw, say a face, then how will you know if it's their eyes are too far apart or if it's actually the character's eyebrows? How will you know that your character's legs are not proportioned correctly? how will you know that the character's arms are too long?
If you don't understand the way the face moves and reacts how are you able to get the correct topology? If a character has bad face topology then how would you be able to quickly show another person how to fix it?
How will you get an idea across if you can't draw it? especially if you are trying to talk to a visual learner? Here's something you'll like:
In 1505 a famous german artist known as Albrecht Dürer was commisioned to draw a White Rhinoceros. He had never seen the animal before and it was only described to him what the creature looked like. This is what he drew.
Not a bad job in my opinion but you can see the differences between the described one and the real one.
He even got the feet right
well... kinda.
So there are actual reasons to draw to become a better 3d artist. Think about it before you complain.
