How long had Kyl’faer and his band of protectors been on the run? It was hard to say exactly- the prince didn’t like to think about it. But in all the neighboring cities, the word was out: the Elven prince had evaded capture. He was out in the woods with a small group, and they were dangerous. At least, that’s what the nobles would have people believe- and maybe it wasn’t far off; after all, the ancient Elven prophecy said that the prince, born a caster, would be the one to lead his people back to glory.
Maybe that was why the war had taken the toll it had. The Elven city of Pyr’adahl lay in ruins in the forest. The king and queen had been tried and put to death.
Kyl’faer had caught wind of the fate of his parents. Since the fall of his home, his magic had grown more unstable, and the city they camped near suffered heavy rain because of his reaction.
With each passing day, the prince’s magic grew, and it became more and more pertinent that he was kept calm- a feat easier said than done, but that was to be expected, all things considered. He found himself daring closer to the nearby city, curiosity getting the better of him. It would have been wiser, safer to stay away, to keep moving- but he found himself drawn to it- what was so special about humans they felt the need to invade his home, take away his family?
It was mid-evening when Kyl’faer had found himself just on the outskirts of the town, still protected by the woods, watching as people hurried across stone streets. He wanted to know what it was like- they seemed entitled at best. He didn’t understand- why did he have to suffer, why did his people pay the price for a human king’s paranoia?
“I want to understand,” he said softly, stepping past the line of trees, daring to cross into the city. He needed to understand. Red curls hung loosely to his shoulders, olive skin catching the eyes of passer-bys. He knew there were rumors of his kind, but did little to hide the pointed ears- if anyone were to approach him, he could simply use his magic on them.
Yeah, because that was safe.
