John makes Dean wait in the car. It’s a fucking gas station. He goes inside and Dean sees the cashier point to the back of the store. John nods and turns, disappearing behind the snack aisle. Dean grumbles and looks at his watch. He was never going to forgive himself for letting Sam get taken.

He doesn’t want to think about what might be happening to his brother.

Lux was gone. Darby felt almost wrong still being here, still breathing, her feet in the sand and the press of water against the shore a constant sound in her ears; but she was here, and so was Ellie. They needed to stay calm, focus, and be in the present moment. She’d been worrying at the ring around her finger and it had been a few hours since the tide had gone down, and she was starting to feel a bit... woozy.

It was probably the lack of sleep, water, and food. That would do it. And yet she’d had all of those things before and never felt quite like this. Like the Arena had tilted on an axis. Like she was floating above it. Like each of her toes in the sand, which she could see when she looked down, were separate from her body.

She spotted someone in the distance and immediately, without thinking, jumped up. “A friend!” she said, turning to Ellie. “Let’s go make a friend!” They needed another friend, didn’t they?
