Brick Club 3.8.21, 3.8.22

This is it. This is the god tier Ward illustration. Nothing will ever make me feel the giddy delight and visceral horror of a grinning Javert. A satisfied Javert is unexpectedly terrifying.

It’s pretty easy to forget that Javert is actually surgically competent at his job. All we’re usually allowed to see of him is the external and internal turmoil that Valjean causes him. Throwing him off his rhythm, if you will. STREET SMARTS. But he’s on the ball tonight and makes short and efficient work of rounding up the Thenardiers and Co. He has the breezy ease of a man who is guaranteed a promotion, a neat little contrast with the pinched, frowny Javert we’re used to seeing.

I’m still slowly getting through the BBC series and this chapter really highlights the mistakes Davies made with Javert. Javert is naturally suspicious but he isn’t aggressive and he doesn’t have a hankering to punish like BBC Javert seems to. He’s rigid, not sadistic. As he arrests the ambushers, he’s satisfied but it never slips into unprofessional glee. Would BBC Javert have allowed Panchaud/Printanier/Bigrenaille his tobacco in prison? Would he be so determined to take everyone in unharmed and peacefully? I just think there’s a fundamental misunderstanding of not only Javert’s character but also his role in the grander story.

When Hugo says Part Second, I’m pretty sure he means Volume 2 (tome deux), which is farther back than my brain bothers to store memories (and also smack in the middle of my extended Brick Club hiatus) but I’m genre savvy so we can work through this. And I’m excited to finally encounter Gavroche in my Les Mis travels! He’s a handful and a half, the little brat (I say with utmost fondness).  Madame Grumpy agrees with me: “What! it is that Satan!”

He’s unperturbed to hear his family’s fate, c’est la vie in this line of work. And why should he be upset? As he says, Javert and his force, the proverbial Coupdesabot, are “monté sur des échasses” and Gavroche and his type slip right under. Don’t want to be hunted, don’t be a crow.

I have to wonder what brought him to the Gorbeau house on this day, so soon after the raid and whistling a premonitory song. This kid’s got one foot in the fae realm, I swear. Les Amis should be honored that this fairy trickster decided they were worth the exploration into human mortality.
