The Stone Roses (I always felt they were more influential to what was going on in 90s alternative than any other band here. Like Husker Du and Fugazi. Plus Frank Black of The Pixies pretty much said they were the real deal).
Radiohead. I like how every album with more progressive and experimental than the rest. "The Bends" doesn't sound like "Pablo Honey". "OK Computer" doesn't sound like "The Bends". "Kid A" doesn't sound like "OK Computer". Kid A is one of my favorite albums regardless of genre (had the 10" Ltd vinyl release).
Bush. I actually had "Sixteen Stone" on cassette. Looking back, they were significantly more heavier than all the bands listed here. Debuted right at the end of the grunge movement and I can tell listening to them that they were very more inspired by Seattle grunge bands than anything else.
Blur. Had to put them on here simply because the first time I heard "Song #2"(🔥) threw me for a loop after hearing "Boys and Girls."
Ok other concert goers anyone else ever notice that sometimes the mics/speakers/sound for the openers is not great and then the mics/speakers/sound for the actual headliner is WAY better? Like it’s completely noticeable and it’s NOT just that the opener is not good live but that it’s a tech issue??????
Have u ever noticed the sound is fucked up for the openers at concerts sometimes???
Oh, this is definitely a thing. I played opening DJ for a few acts/DJs and it felt like the sound was whack on purpose.
And when my friends would open up shows with their bands, I noticed the same thing. The sound was just messed up, like the soundboard guy or gal doesn't care because they're not the headliner.
Some of my favorite concerts have been in dive bars, VFWs, and odd little DIY all purposes venues. Like, I ended up going to some insane punk and hardcore show that was in the basement of somebody's house.
I always enjoyed concerts at GA Standing room only venues (pit action guaranteed)i used to be a wild and crazy kid in the 90s crowdsurfing and doing stage dives (still thinking about an epic stage dive I did at a Sick Of It All show when I was in high school😅)
Arena shows were cool (before cellphones especially). Went to Family Values Tour 1999 (with Limp Bizkit, Filter, Crystal Method, Mobb Deep, Ja Rule, and Staind) and Blink 182 at the same venue (Civic Arena/Mellon Arena...RIP) and those shows were fun especially considering during the end of the night, people in the front rows of the paid seats would rush into the pit because our mentality was "security guards can't stop us all."
In all honesty, my least favorite concerts are festivals. The last festival I went to I had VIP passes and I didn't realize how much of the action you actually miss by being in VIP (sure, you can chill with industry people and celebrities and stuff, but I'd rather be in the crowd with everybody else.) It's just too much. Overpriced tickets. Overpriced parking. Overpriced food & drink. Can't catch all the artists/bands you want unless you schedule it out due to the fact they're playing on different stages at different times.
Clubs are cool for DJs and I think that's it.
I've been to shows that have had tens of thousands of people in attendance and i've been to shows where less than twenty people were in the venue. And it's the smaller, more personal and intimate venues that provide a better experience.
Absolutely not. Let me tell you a story. My high school and college years in Pittsburgh in the late 90s and 2000s, I used to hang out with a bunch of skater dudes and punk rockers who listened to hip-hop and did graffiti as well. I started listening to a lot of House, Techno, Breaks, Trance, and DNB/Jungle too (this was around the time I decided to start DJing) and my friends were not feeling that stuff so I would just end up going to mad concerts, raves, and shows to see my favorite DJs and producers live alone simply because I had no one to go with. Oddly enough, that's how I found a new group of friends to hang out with that did like that music...that was the predecessor to my years of raving and clubbing living in NYC. 🤣
Long story short, I'd rather go to a show/gig/concert that i'm feeling myself than drag somebody along that's not feeling it just to not feel alone. The experience doesn't stop being real just because somebody else isn't there to experience it alongside with you.
