I was very sad to learn of the death of Brent McLachlan. Brent was the drummer of New Zealand bands The Gordons, Skeptics and Bailterspace .He was also a recording engineer based in New York City, working out of his studio 30 Below. 30 Below was underneath Rogue Music in midtown Manhattan. It was here we recorded Brian Chase playing drums for the new Foetus album HALT. In the past I had sessions with Brent recording a string quartet for arrangements I made for the Helm album "Chemical Flowers", as well as drum sessions with Pete Moffett for a project for female singers I am still working on.
Brent lost his life after a long battle with cancer. In fact he was doing chemo treatments around the time we were in the studio. He was so brave and philosophical about his condition, which was inspiring and humbling. It seemed that he wanted to work until the end.
Brent was a lovely guy. Generous, open and friendly. He was also an excellent recording engineer and really put a lot into our sessions, and I was thrilled with the end results.
I knew Brent for over thirty years, since Bailter Space landed in NYC in the early 90's. Rest in Power Brent, you will be missed.
