Higurashi Rei episode 1 was pure comedy, mostly somewhat absurdist ecchi comedy at that, and I didn't really like it.
tropicalllllllllllllllllllllllllllll 14 good
The gang talked about a scary story. This is a review.
That was alright. Didn’t really find myself all that endeared by the comedy for the first episode so that was a mediocre start. Comedy for last episode was really good though, particularly because Rena’s seiyuu’s deliveries are so fucking great at being that level of darkly serious and angry that works as a really funny contrast to what’s actually happening, so I was about that. Would actually say it’s what pushed the score up to a 7 for me. Cause I found the actual main part of Rei - that being Saikoroshi arc - to be a bit underwhelming?
I guess it’s like, it makes sense to have as something of an “epilogue” story, Rika fought so hard for this world so let’s thrust her into a totally different and arguably better world so she can have XYZ arc about how she was right to fight like she did or something, prove the validity of what she went through to reach her goal. Like I do like that and ultimately enjoy the experience and what we get out of it, but it just felt sort of undercooked? The sinless world she finds herself in has mechanics but they’re so underdeveloped as to feel like a wasted opportunity. A big part of Rika’s guilt over the timeline she ended up in is something to do with having to kill her mum in sinless world to end up in world she fought for, but since Rika’s mum’s never been a relevant character up to this point it just kinda feels dissonant with the rest of Rika’s character and the franchise? The reason Rika needs to feel guilty over her mum is because Hanyuu wanted to teach Rika some sort of lesson because of her own personal experiences that are caked in some giant exposition dump I couldn’t understand? Idk it was weird. Understand and appreciate the epilogue at the end of the day and do think it was a good arc overall, but I definitely had more problems with it than like, every other arc. Still good enough to score positively though.
And then yeah that’s every relevant part of Higurashi completed. :RikaPoggers:
