Throwback Tom Tweets: 30th March 2012
Though Tom talks about forgiveness in this tweet, I think it’s still particularly relevant to how we as a fandom consume old interviews and appearances.
I see it all the time. Comments on mine and others' edits about how they wish they could have ‘the old Tom back’ or how much people ‘miss this Tom’. And look, I get it. I’ve said it myself sometimes.
I completely understand that fans love the younger, less guarded ‘circus bear’ Tom. I do too. And I get to still enjoy all of those moments in old videos. But that doesn’t mean I can’t also love the more mature, less showy version. It’s called maturity. Sure. Things have happened to make Tom more guarded. That’s life. We all experience it. The difference is that the majority of us don’t do it in the public eye, under constant scrutiny, and have millions of people complaining when we don’t behave silly - or their perceived version of silly - any longer.
So how about this? Let’s not judge Tom on who he used to be. Let’s allow Tom to be who he is. Let’s see him “now”. Not “then”. <3
