Secondhand Scoreboard

  The scoreboard that I just installed in the 303bnb was missing its second hand. As you can see in the pictures, the broken 6-32 screw was barely visible inside the sheath of the minute hand.

  To get a hole properly centered in the broken shaft I had to make a guide from a piece of aluminum, The guide slipped over the broken shaft and made it possible for my 2-56 tap drill to stay on course.

  After tapping both the shaft that the replacement tip, I screwed in a small piece of 2-56 threaded rod with some red locktite. It looks as though it was never broken and has the strength to last another 70 years. 

  I used a photo that I found online to recreate the size and shape of the original second hand. Check out the install post to see it in all its glory.

TV Shelf for Hiding Wires:

  The brackets featured in yesterday’s post were added to a simple bent sheet metal shelf. The brackets were drilled and spaced to work with preexisting screws that would normally hold on the TV’s feet. Now the wires have a very short run and do not have to be routed through the wall. I did put an outlet behind the TV to remedy that wire as well.

Library Bookshelves: Anchor Cups

  The four main supports for the bookshelves are only anchored to the floor and ceiling through slip fit cups. There is no connection between the shelving unit to the wall. The upper and lower cups were made to slip over the ends of the 2″ square steel tubing allowing me to precisely level them by adding shims inside the bottom cup.

  After the first post was in place, the other three were located to it using the pre-cut shelves as spacers and a large contractors level to keep it all plumb.

303bnb Barnwood Headboard Part 4:

Fitting the barn wood was relatively easy. All of the boards I had on hand (thanks dad) were longer than the span, giving me the freedom to trim the rough ends. I had to hand plane some high spots to get the gaps right, but overall the boards were pretty straight. I tried to pick and arrange the boards to both randomize the coloring and put the better boards up high. Once the layout was done, I finished each board with a double coat of clear acrylic.

 I almost forgot to post a picture of this frame detail. I notched out the bottom of each side rail to accommodate the baseboards. Now the frame can be directly bolted to the wall using the bungs I welded on in part 1.

303bnb: Bowling Alley Coffee & End Tables #2

 The legs for the coffee table are each made from 4 pieces of .250″x4″ steel flat bar, they were MIG welded on the inside corners and TIG welded on the outside (to keep from having to grind the welds flat). I sprayed them with semi-gloss black to keep with the black metal theme that will be used throughout the loft. 

 The piece of the bowling alley was stained a light color to bring out the grain variations and to highlight the cool end grain. It was then finished with a clear acrylic sealer and screwed to the two legs. 

  The curved pieces are shown to illustrate how I was able to separate the individual layers just far enough to get glue between the boards.

Frames to Magnetic Marker Boards: 303bnb

  We bought these two beautiful frames from a flea market for 5$ each. A quick shot of clear coat and some vinyl covered galvanized steel made them into fantastic message boards.

Industrial Library Shelving: Wooden Parts

 While making a shelving unit that is 10ft wide and 12ft tall, I quickly found out that finding 10ft long lumber wasn’t an option. If it were possible, the expense would be enormous. So I was forced back into the arms of my old friend, Plywood. Three sheets, cut, sanded, and lap jointed was just what I needed. The fronts will get solid wood trim and the shelves will be full, so who cares that the shelves are imperfect and don’t have continuous grain. Sacrifices must be made.
