I found this video to be helpful in highlighting the huge gap in phonological awareness and development of children from low socioeconomic backgrounds compared to children from higher socioeconomic backgrounds. It shows the paths both children follow since birth.

Children from higher income families hear 30 million more words than children from lower income households by the time they're three. To close the 30 million word gap in Oakland and promote school readiness, the Bay Area Council teamed up with Goodby Silverstein & Partners to create the Talk Read Sing Campaign. It's an innovative approach to a sensitive issue and beautifully executed. Watch!
