Charles Villiers was not particularly partial to celebrations in general. He was notorious for showing up late to the Villiers Christmas dinner with a scowl on his face and a gun still residing in his jacket. In fact, a week ago at Christmas dinner had been an exact example of that everlasting tradition. He never celebrated birthdays or other religious based holidays, he avoided large celebratory events as often as possible. Unfortunately, his extended family seemed to thrive on garish occasions such as these. A New Years Eve Ball. How very nauseating. It was, however, a business opportunity. The ballroom was scattered with investors and brokers and people who, when given just enough ale, would gamble away their fortune at the blink of an eye. He’d already spoken about stocks with several finely dressed individuals, though always keeping his own thoughts reserved and nonchalant. There was opportunity for a different type of business too, a type that Francis had specifically warned him against discussing this evening. Despite his uncle’s warnings, beneath the hum of the orchestra and the clinking of glasses and laughter that echoed throughout the room, his daggers palmed powder to the opulent nosebleeders that were keen for one last fix before the new year. Not only were his rats of the underground scattering the floor, but Charles was on the hunt for potential new recruits. This was the first time in months that the crews had been together, and the first time in years that Charles had had the opportunity to observe the new young talent that had trickled into the society in recent times. It was unlikely that he’d approach anyone tonight with an offer, but he was certainly going to take the opportunity to peruse the catalogue. Charles sipped at a glass of champagne distastefully, scanning his eyes over the room and then glancing sideways at the person who had just brushed his side. “Who invited you?” He quipped dryly, looking them up and down.
