Crumbling Bridges

To live is to grow and to change, To become a different person to the one you were yesterday. I am unsure how to feel about growing distant from you. Friendships that last decades are rare, Rarer still when they formed in the primordial soup of childhood. I am wondering if I am witnessing why, If the bridge is crumbling not from disuse or neglect But merely tectonic plates pulling in different directions, Merely the world saying that this was not meant to last.

I cannot speak without seeing the echoes of who we once were, And I know their forms make it hard to see how things are. Nostalgia is a sweet poison, And my memories are tainted. I wonder how they look under the harsh light of a sterile room, Away from all the roses and candles. Were we truly friends or just acquaintances of circumstance? Was there anything beyond boredom and loneliness? I should not have to convince myself that I enjoyed my time with you. And yet here we are, Standing on a crumbling bridge, Wondering if we should walk away before it collapses.
