Memories of Oden

Oden is a simple dish, Of radish and konjac and other things Boiled in broth. Some places keep a master stock, Letting it simmer and strengthen over time, A perpetual stew, A ship of Theseus.

We don't really remember things. There is no archive we browse through, Instead there is a winding web Where we remember the last time we remembered, Memories warping like all stories do between retellings.

I eat oden on a hot Sydney night, And remember a rainy afternoon amongst cherry blossoms. It is a hazy path I have rarely walked, For there are many more memories of Japan that stand out like fireflies. And yet even the fog can be beautiful. How else can we touch the clouds? All I know is I was too young to appreciate the tour and the culture, But cold enough to savour a hot bowl of soup.
