On this day, September 9, in 1850, California became the 31st U.S. state via the Compromise of 1850, a collection of five resolutions that aimed to grant California statehood as a free state, while also offering other concessions to slave states to stave off conflict over the issues of slavery and territorial expansion.

These photographs of Monterey‘s Cypress Rock and Yosemite Valley were captured in 1889, during Pierre Samuel du Pont’s West Coast trip to Santa Cruz, Monterey, Del Monte, San Francisco and Yosemite National Park in California, as well as Portland, Oregon; Yellowstone National Park; Silka, Alaska; and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

These photographs are from Hagley Library’s P.S. du Pont Longwood photograph collection (Accession 1969.002). This collection of over 6,400 photographs includes images collected by Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) during his life. Over 1000 images from the collection show the development of Longwood Gardens. In commemoration of California’s statehood, which became official on this day in 1850, we’re sharing these 1902 and 1917 postcards featuring the redwood and sequoia forests of Santa Cruz. Included in this post are images of the General Sherman Tree, the world’s largest tree by volume and estimated today to be 2,300 to 2,700 years old, and the General Grant Tree, the “Nation’s Christmas Tree”, estimated to be approximately 1,650 years old.
