Still trying to figure out the best ways to work with this stuff. #borosilicate #flameworking #3dprinted #ceramics #glass #glassofig #33coe (at RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences)
Another Saturday, another test session in the flameshop. I've figured out how to properly attach the #3dprinted #33coe compatible clay to a #glass rod so I can more easily work with it in the flame. . I wish I could go a little faster on this front, but I have this thing called a thesis I have to deal with. . #ceramics #sculpture #3dprint #borosilicate #flameworking #glassofig #OMGstillGradSchool (at RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences)
I was rushed for time at the end, so there are a few surface imperfections, but this piece really points me towards some exciting possible directions for me to explore. . This #marble is just over an inch and a half in diameter. I was experimenting with applying glass, both clear and colored, directly to the surface of the #3dprinted #33coe compatible #ceramics formula. I wanted to see what extended exposure to a direct torch flame would do to the printed piece. . I'm really pleased with the performance of this formula overall. It prints well, it can deal with thermal shock if printed with certain physical structures, and it's more compatible than a number of notorious glass colors I've used. . #flameworking #borosilicate #glass #sculpture #glassofig #OMGstillGradSchool (at RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences)
They live! Looks like the tweaked for #3dprinting version of my #33coe clay body is still compatible with #borosilicate #glass . . . #3dprinted #ceramics #marble #glassofig #OMGstillGradSchool (at Rochester Institute of Technology)
So, it looks like you can abuse the crap out of certain #3dprinted #ceramics structures in the torch. If you have thin enough walls and infill, they seem to become very tolerant of thermal shock. This encased piece was about a cubic inch in size, and I was able to spot heat parts of it to apply color without it breaking from thermal shock. . We'll see if this holds up after annealing. . #3dprinting #flameworking #33coe #borosilicate #marble #glassofig (at RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences)
Extreme glazing! . I mentioned before that the structures printed with infill were much more tolerant of thermal shock than the solid shells. Another interesting observation is that I can technically "torch fire" these pieces. I wonder if I can add some colorants into the mix if I'm going to encase them in glass. So many research possibilities that aren't going to help my thesis! . #3dprinted #ceramics #sculpture #borosilicate #33coe #borosilicate #flameworking #glassofig #OMGstillGradSchool (at RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences)
#3dprinted #33coe compatible #ceramics encased in #borosilicate glass in the torch, and shaped in a mold made from #3dprinting a plastic positive using a special thermal shock resistant clay body. . . It looks like there are some structures that can increase the stress in the #glass enough to cause cracking, but it doesn't look any worse than some of the temperamental boro colors. I may do a little more tuning to the formula, but I'm not too concerned right now. It still looks to be within acceptable tolerances. . . I'm really digging the magnification going on here. #glassofig #sculpture #OMGstillGradSchool (at RIT College of Imaging Arts and Sciences)
