Fireflies
@gaygent-romanoff: steve and bucky and an outside park???
Thank you Kora!! :)
It’s one of those nights where you can faintly make out the stars shining way overhead. This far into the park Steve can’t hear any cars or see any building and it feels, just a little bit, like they’re back home.
“Sap” is what Bucky says when he mentions it. Steve bumps into his shoulder, smiling. It’s a narrow path, but he’s not gonna leave Bucky’s side.
Steve says, “Yeah, but you love me.”
Bucky takes his hand in response and light from a lamppost catches in his hair. He looks over his shoulder, mid-sentence, but something on Steve’s face must be off because he stops walking. There’s a faint smile, Steve thinks, that’s playing on the corner of his mouth and it looks like a secret just for him.
“What?” Steve asks, once Bucky’s been looking at him for a few breaths.
A firefly lands on Bucky’s collar.
He looks like magic and impossible things.
“The look on your face,” Bucky says, gesturing vaguely. His metal arm is brilliant in the lamplight.
“What look?”
Bucky shakes his head, still smiling that secret smile. “You look like that day you held my little sister,” he says, “like you’re in love. Except more so, right now.”
Warmth floods Steve’s cheeks even in the night air. Bucky places a palm on his cheek, runs a thumb over the bone just under his eye.
Steve swallows and says, “Yeah?”
Another firefly, this time in Bucky’s hair, and Steve reaches out to touch it. There’s a star hovering right above his left arm and Steve thinks how lovely it is, that there’s a star around him and it isn’t red.
“Yeah,” Bucky says. He’s looking at Steve steadily when he says, “You’re looking at me like you love me.”
And it’s nothing at all and yet everything in the world for Steve to exhale (it tugs on something in his chest) and pull Bucky close and say, “Sap.” And then, as Bucky laughs and threads his fingers through his hair, Steve says, “That’s because I do.”
There are stars shining way overhead, and Bucky kisses him. It’s hard to kiss him because he’s smiling so wide and then, as Steve’s thinking it, Bucky laughs under his lips. Steve says something that sounds a lot like sap but it’s hard for him to tell through Bucky’s laughter.
And it feels, just a little bit, maybe a lot, like it’s better than back home when Steve weaves their fingers together.
They walk on down the path and fireflies land in their hair.
happy birthday! 🎈🎉🥳🎉🎈
