Caregiving
Probably no one ever thinks about the caregivers and spouses of diabetics. My soon to be husband is diabetic, and there is an unspoken bond with every wife-of-a-diabetic and parent-of-a-diabetic I have ever met. We all know the struggle of not only keeping track of our shit, but helping them keep track of theirs. It means getting up at 3 am to get them taken care of when they have a hypoglycemic episode. It means carrying a purse when you go out so that you have their meter, insulin, and sugar gel or candy. It means not ever getting the last brownie or cookie because in a hypoglycemic haze they crammed it in their face. It is knowing the timing in your head for when you need to eat so that they eat, so that they don't spike high or go too low. It's knowing their signs that they are going low or high, and it can be something as simple as a look on their face or the way they act or a word they use. Being calm in the face of something going sideways really quick. Having to be the responsible one when hypoglycemia causes them to act irrational.
Shout out to all you other diabetic caretakers and lovers-of-someone-with-diabetes. You are awesome.
