Impressive Statue Profiling by OMNI 12S Router
The most impressive operation or capability of a CNC router is its 3D versatility. Most CNC routers in today’s world are 3D capable. To understand 3D you need to get the basics of previous routers. CNC Routers move on 3 axes. The previous routers had the Z-axis moving when there was no movement in the X and Y-axis. The modern routers have all the axes moving smoothly allowing the tool bits to occupy any point in the third dimension space. Hence the classification that all routers are capable of 3D carving.
Difference Between 2D, 2.5D and 3D
In the 2D carving, there was just a vertical depth of cut to define relief in the design. In 2.5D there was the angular depth of cut such as a V-carve cut to indicate relief as well as shadows in recesses. The 3D has both surface depth (vertical) and relief depth (angular). Subtracting layers of material at any given point in the design (such as a model of a head) give the best definition of a 3D carving.
Defining 3D mathematically puts the onus on the Z-axis which pinpoints positions in layers varyingthe depth of cut while the X-axis and Y-axis are in motion. It creates a contour map in layers when seen as a flat structure. Only when all the layers are stacked, then the 3D image appears. The complexity of tool paths is attributable to the software. The program must allow visualization, particularly in areas where pocketing of the material (subtracting material in varying amounts), is essential.
Once the tool path is frozen, the 3D router such as the OMNI 12S multi-spindle CNC machine begins operations. The 12S is a workhorse as it can process 12 pieces at the same time. An excellent productivity tool the 12S has 12 spindles and rotary device. Primarily meant for bulk production of newel posts, staircase columns, Statue profiling, sofa legs, chair legs, table legs, kitchen island legs, wardrobe legs, corbels, modillions, and baseball bats. The rotary device is the 4th axis allowing machining of parts in the round. An example of Statue profiling in the YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUU4Mw0VZMQ) is an excellent example.
