Happy #3FatesFactsFriday Today’s fact is brought to you by 🐻 My piece of paranormal information this week is the story of the Ghost Ship found abandoned off the coast of North Carolina in what is referred to as the Outerbanks. A massive schooner was sailing along the shores of Cape Hatteras in January of 1921. The ship, dubbed the Carroll A Deering, had been traveling from Barbados. It passed by the Cape Hatteras Lookout Lightship and the Diamond Shoals Lightship. Crew members had been seen milling about onboard the deck. The ship apparently was seen to be floundering off the shores of the cape but due to heavy storms at sea a rescue ship could not reach the schooner until February 4, 1921. Upon boarding the ship the “rescuers” found an eerie site. They discovered that all personal belongings, navigational equipment, maps, papers, and even the ship’s anchors were missing. In addition, food had been placed out as if for a meal. However, there was no sign of the crew. This week we have a pirate fact that'll make you shiver your timbers. 🏴‍☠️🦜 Captain Blackbeard, born as Edward Teach, was one of the most well-known and feared pirates of all time. He and his crew would pillage ships all across the Atlantic Ocean from 1716 to 1718. In 1718, Blackbeard's crew was hunted down by a crew sent specifically to kill them just off the coast of North Carolina on Ocracoke Island. Ultimately, Blackbeard was beheaded with his head being hoisted on to the bow of the ship that killed him and his body tossed into the ocean. Since then, it is believed that the spirit of Blackbeard has been haunting this area. Most people claimed to encounter Blackbeard by a small channel on the Island called Teach's Hole. Some people have seen an unusual light moving in the water believing that it's Blackbeard swimming around looking for his decapitated head. Happy #3FatesFactsFriday! Today is brought to you by 🐝! The Salesian School for Boys in Goshen, NY was built in the 1930s and still stands, albeit condemned, to this very day. However if you decide to visit, you won’t be able to help but wonder if the fencing keeping people out of the abandoned school isn’t keeping the secrets of something far more haunting in. On August 9, 1964 a little boy that was attending the school somehow made his way up onto the roof of the school in the middle of the night, barefoot and clad only in pajamas. It is from the roof he tumbled 36ft to his death. The case of how this happened still remains unsolved to this very day. Although the boy’s death was ruled accidental by the county coroner at the time, many speculate that the little boy may have been purposely thrown off the roof resulting in his death. In 2003, the case was reopened when it was noticed that details about the boy’s death were strange. In order for the little boy to have fallen from the roof he had to get over a 4 foot tall concrete barricade all by himself, which police now believe is very unlikely. Where the little boy’s body was discovered was also deemed too far away from the building to be the result of an accidental fall. There was also a discrepancy upon the time of death which was now believed to be several hours earlier than what was originally reported. Is it possible that this boy’s demise wasn’t the result of an accident but actually a heinous murder by a school bully that was covered up by the administration? Many believe this may be the case, including police. Mysteriously enough a fire that happened on the school property in the 1970s destroyed all the information on what students were enrolled at the time of the boy’s death leaving police unable to investigate further. The school closed in 1991 and has remained vacant ever since. Or has it? Visitors to the school grounds bordering the fenced in building claim to see the apparition of a boy wandering past the windows of the school. There are stories of a ghostly figure appearing on the roof at night and faint whispers hanging in the Summer air. Happy #3FatesFactsFriday Today’s fact is brought to you by 🐻 New York City has quite a few haunted areas. One which I have found to be quite intriguing is North Brother Island. This 13 acre piece of land is located in the East River just a few miles from Manhattan Island. North Brother Island has a tragic history which first began when the Riverside Hospital was relocated onto it. Highly contagious patients whose diseases such as small pox, tuberculosis, yellow fever and typhus were treated by the staff there. The intent was to isolate these patients in order to maintain them, but many patients were kept there against their will, and eventually died there. There was no telephone service and visitors were not allowed. The most notorious of these patients was Mary Mallon, who was more commonly known as Typhoid Mary. The island itself is thought to be extremely haunted. Many patients died on the island, there was even a morgue built there for those who did not survive their quarantine. Conditions were horrible: overcrowding, food shortages, and much of the winter, no heat. In 1904, a boat carrying a church group caught fire and sank near the island. Staff from the hospital helped to pull bodies from the water.. Over 1000 people died when it sank. Due to the close proximity of Riker’s Island, visitors ito North Brother island is strictly prohibited. However, past visitors have claimed to hear screams coming from the center of the island near the remains of Riverside Hospital, as well as hospital gowned apparitions and whispering sounds. The island’s past has certainly opened paths for paranormal activity. Happy #3FatesFactsFriday Today’s fact is brought to you by 🥔 Summer is here, so to help everyone cool down from the hot days ahead, here's a literal bone-chilling fact for you hailing from the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan! ❄️ 🇯🇵 Yuki Onna (translates to Snow Woman in English) are yokai, mystical spirits from Japanese folklore, that are known to bring lost travelers in northern Japan during heavy snowstorms to their demise. Yuki Onna are described as very beautiful young women with long black hair, snow white skin and are usually wearing a white kimono or sometimes nude. When they walk through the snow, they leave no tracks. Their bodies are cold as ice. Yuki Onna will often wait by mountain roads for unsuspecting prey. They will try to allure men to let their guard down, but will pursue anyone of any gender. A Yuki Onna will freeze their prey using an icy breath and then drain their life essence, leaving them for dead. There have even been some stories of Yuki Onna breaking into houses in the mountains late at night freezing people in their sleep. Sometimes, Yuki Onna will fall in love with their prey and will letting them live or even marrying them. There was a story of a man who lived in the Yamagata prefecture of Japan that claimed to be married to a Yuki Onna. His wife would refuse to take baths. Well.. last week’s 3Fates Facts Friday written by Bee intrigued me when she suggested visiting the Forest Park Cemetery, otherwise known as The Gates of Hell. So I did some research on this suggested haunt for myself. The Forest Park Cemetery, located in Troy, NY, was formerly known as the Pinewoods Cemetery. It has graves dating back as far as the 1850’s and more recently has been referred to as the Gates of Hell by locals. The cemetery is mostly abandoned with more than a thousand graves which are the final resting place of restless souls. Upon passing through the gates of the cemetery there is a definite moody and dark atmosphere. Upon first wandering into the cemetery one will come upon the beheaded statue of an angel. Legend has it that visitors have seen blood dripping down the neck of this angel. For those visitors with the bravery to wander further into the cemetery beyond this beheaded angel and the many sunken graves, you may just wind up with scratches on the back of your neck and down your forearms as experienced by previous guests to the grounds. Paranormal investigators to the cemetery have reported seeing a young man dressed as a soldier appearing and hearing the word “hello”. This is believed to be the spirit of a young German Soldier who committed suicide on the grounds in the early 20th century. Whether you believe in the supernatural or not, these legends that still exist today are very intriguing to many people. So if you are one of the many, perhaps you should look into these Gates of Hell stories yourself. Happy #3FatesFactsFriday Today’s fact is brought to you by 🐻! The Palisades Center mall in West Nyack, NY, is a very busy mall that many people including myself and perhaps you, too, have frequented. There is however, a very interesting fact surrounding this mall that I just recently found out. Did you know that the mall is actually built around a cemetery that is still in the middle of one of the parking lots? It’s true, the Mount Moor Cemetery predates the mall by about 150 years and because of its historic nature, the bodies could not be exhumed and relocated. Therefore, the mall and parking lots were built around the cemetery. The cemetery has a small parking area near the gate and marker with its name. It is located on the south side of the mall in front of the parking garage and the Barnes and Noble store. Most people, including myself, rarely notice it or the grave stones when bustling by to do their shopping. However, mall employees and customers have noticed paranormal occurrences that might coincide with the cemetery. There have been quite a few reports of shadowy figures in one of the large stores closest to the cemetery. A figure has been seen roaming through the store late at night or early in the morning, but upon investigation, no one is ever found. Happy #3FatesFactsFriday Today’s fact is brought to you by 🥔 Crystal balls are often associated with fortunetellers and similar clairvoyants, but when did they start using them? 🔮 According to all known written history about crystal balls, they were first used by Celtic Druids sometime around the 3rd century BCE. Druids would act as teachers, priests,or judges in Celtic society. Druids would often practice scrying by gazing into reflective surfaces like pools of water or shiny stones. Eventually, the Druids started to craft spheres made of glass or gemstones which would come to be known as the crystal ball. After the Romans took over the British isles in the 1st century CE, Druidic practices including crystal ball scrying, were heavily shunned as Christianity was becoming the dominant religion in that area. For the next several hundred years, crystal balls were seldom used. During the middle ages and early Renaissance eras, crystal balls were used as decor, but some would allegedly practice crystal scrying in secrecy from the church. Once the Renaissance era came about, crystal balls started making a resurgence.
