The teapot has as much character as Meryl's typewriter does, the same small chips and nicks of years of consistent use. The floral design on it is certainly beautiful, and she can see why someone like Milly—someone whose mantles and end tables are overflowing with little knick knacks and bits of color—would hang on to something so unique. But every time she sees Milly carefully wrapping a towel around the handle to compensate for an insulator that's worn out, or so thoroughly scrubbing the inside of the pot after use, she can't help but feel exhausted by proxy.

So she does what any reasonable-thinking person would do and goes to the department store bright and early one Saturday—the better to avoid any crowds—and buys a cheery scarlet electric kettle.

Meryl is sure she's doing Milly a favor by buying her an electric kettle to replace her fussy antique teapot. She learns otherwise when she asks Milly to tell her about the why the teapot is so special to her. (Milly Week, Day 4: Pudding and Ceylon Tea)
