(PROFILE) Hayley Williams
Hayley Williams
Vocal Classification: Lyric Mezzo-Soprano
Vocal Range: Bb2 - G#5 - A6
Supported Range: Eb3 ~ C5/C#5
Low Register: Hayley’s strongest and most consistent register. Even in her earlier years, Hayley showed a strong sense of connection and support in her low register down to F#3, shown in The Only Exception. With time, this register has actually seen even more improvement from the already good support she had in her low voice, extending her support down to Eb3 consistently, such as in Landslide. Overall, this register is very solid, and one of the best low registers for any female in pop music currently.
Mixed Register: Hayley is able to maintain consistent resonance and produce a healthy vibrato up to C5 consistently, shown in Renegade. This resonance can extend up to C#5 occasionally, but she has support usually on her C#5s as well. Inconsistently, she’s shown the ability to carry this support as high as D5 before, but that support is very inconsistent. Hayley’s mix is inconsistent, with it sometimes being even and sometimes being more chesty, which has become more frequent with time. Above C#5, Hayley struggles with a high larynx, throatiness and poor pitch.
Upper Register: Not usually ever shown, Hayley has shown she can carry a falsetto as high as A6, and a connected head voice up to G5, shown in Miracle. Whenever she has used a head voice, Hayley’s shown proper support up to F5, but above that, it becomes tight and strained. Hayley should work on using this register more, as she doesn’t use her upper register very often at all, due to the style of music she sings doesn’t require it.
Agility: Due to her repertoire, Hayley doesn’t need to use agility, and shows little to no interest in doing them. However, recently she’s shown an interest in pursuing more agility, but since she used to neglect developing agility, if she does try to execute a run that’s more than a simple vocal trill, it sounds mushy and un-coordinated, such as in a more recent cover of The Only Exception.
Musicality/Musicianship: Hayley has a good musical ear and uses stylistic embellishments like airiness, nasality and throatiness well, and changing her approach to higher belts sometimes as well, and usually staying in a range that suits her voice. However, a downfall of her musicianship is that she usually attempts more stylistic musical embellishments with a very dangerous technique, such as yelling out higher belts with a chesty mix and a high larynx, as well as no desire to even try and support the note.
Overall: With a richer, darker and weightier voice than a lot of sopranos, Hayley would be most likely classified as a lyric mezzo-soprano. Hayley has shown a desire to be a vocalist before, and still shows that same desire to be a vocalist, and has overall maintained her vocal ability rather decently over the years, with improvements in some areas of her voice being shown more often. If she wants to continue the path she has got going for her, Hayley should try to even out her mix, and explore her head voice more, but since she’s a rock-style vocalist, it might not be truly necessary. Regardless, Hayley has shown a respectable level of vocal technique over the years.
