Angela Wins a Leadville Qualifier!
It was a scramble to make it to the Wilmington 100 Leadville Series race but I was determined to make it happen. Left home Friday and drove through the night to the KOA near Whiteface and managed to get an hour nap in before making a mad scramble for the start line. Didn't know what to expect terrain wise but only knowing that there was pavement, gravel, single track and two track. Decided to just leave my Rocket Ron on the front and Aspen on the back. Suffered a bit more for not doing appropriate race research. Barely any single track and my usual 1.8's would have been a smarter weapon of choice. Avoided an insane crash during the high speed start. Total carnage! Failed to eat properly because I had my Camelbak on and got fed up with trying to wrestle food out of my pockets. A little over 5 hours of hammering with over 7000ft of climbing fueled by one gel, two fruit bars, one bottle of water and one bottle of Body Armor. Had an insane battle with another lady until all my radio tower climbing on Zwift paid off and I heard her crack and slowly fall off my wheel. I dug deep to get a gap on her and prayed for more hills and single track. Limped to the finish line completely exhausted and cursing the race organizer for making the last part of the course hard as fu$% but victorious. Definitely one of the most grueling and relentless races I have done. Won the coin that would allow me to enter the Leadville 100 but in the end decided to give it to the 2nd place lady because she wanted it more then me. Epic day for sure!!
