Cats, Artificial Intelligence, and the role of Paidia What links cats and Artificial intelligence is not only our perception of them as highly cerebral, with slight or total lack of empathy, but also their proximity to unpredictable outcomes. Yes, we know that if we input such and such into an algorithm it will give such and such back, but the result, programmed but not fixed seems to be unpredictable, and creative. Similarly, cats also touch on this uncertainty. Paidia, from the greek « paidia » is a way of describing a sporatic and intuitive way of engaging in play, ungoverned by rules unlike its opposite « ludus ». Seemingly ungoverned by rules, just like A.I., cats allow us to, through their silly unpredictable actions, engage in a sort of « 3rd party » paidia, intuitive play. Hide and Seek in the Artist Studio #3ssselect edited by @fleurbleueeeee The artist studio topoi was never new - stories about the studio practice, persona, special abilities or social standing of artists have been present in artists' biographies and autobiographies ever since Vasari's The Lives of the Most Eminent Paint­ers, Sculptors, and Architects (1550–1568). The artists' anecdotes always appear both realistic and mythical. Painters like Courbet take the advantage of the ability to portray both - in The Painter's Studio: A real allegory summing up seven years of my artistic and moral life (L'Atelier du peintre), "the world" came to be painted at Courbet's studio. As the title suggests, the painting is open to allegorical interpretations while being realistic rather than factual itself. Besides, despite showing the creation, the artists' intention remains veiled. When the image-making media is substituted by photography, what would be portrayed in the artist studio?
