A year ago we released our update on the World Trade Center complex, SIXTEEN ACRES, SEVENTEEN YEARS, evaluating the status of each site on the campus. The first major development since then happened this week, when the state released a request for proposals for 5 WTC. Most notably, the request would permit a 900' residential skyscraper on the site – the first residential building on the World Trade Center site as residential was harshly opposed during the initial planning sessions in the years following 9/11. Did it rain today? It sure did yesterday as I looked back when my then-boyfriend told me to watch TV and it seemed as if it was a scene in Manhattan from a movie as we’re on the opposite coast (and he just told me he heard it on the radio first). We get many questions on the status of 2 World Trade Center, one of the final unbuilt towers an WTC site. While 2 WTC has seen little to no signs of​ ​progress, one part of the site has recently seen a small development. A new temporary plaza, designed by Gabellini Sheppard, will be located on the eastern section of the site and will partially be built within the building's original footprint.​ ​Last week the designated plaza space has been paved over with concrete and ready for the installationof the new​ ​plaza's seating areas,landscaped planters, stone walkways, and illuminated geometrically extruded green walls that will cover the blank gray​ ​construction barrier what would have been part of the main lobby​ ​and podium of 2 WTC. Completion of the plaza is yet to be announced. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Originally designed by Norman Foster,#2WTC is the last tower to be built at the 16-acre site of the World Trade Center, not including 5 #WTC which is no longer a tangible project. ​ But in the summer of 2015, Silverstein the developer chose a new design by Bjarke Ingels Group for their prospective tenant, News Corp. Since News Corp backed out, deciding to remain in Midtown there have been no substantial developments on the fate of 2 WTC. On our tour of #3WTC earlier this month a rep for Silverstein confirmed there are no prospective tenants at the moment. Unlike the other WTC towers, an anchor tenant is needed before construction on 2 WTC can begin. The construction of the temporary plaza further illustrates the uncertainty of 2 WTC reaching its 1350-foot height in the next decade. (at World Trade Center)
