Married at First Sight AU

Explanation for those who haven’t seen the show, the premise of Marriage at First Sight is that two strangers are paired by relationship coaches and agree to get married.

Here is a snippet from the first chapter ‘First comes Misunderstandings…’

It all started with a simple misunderstanding.

Like most things in Marinette’s life, the misunderstanding snowballed, becoming bigger and bigger until it was an avalanche and she’s cold and it’s white everywhere and she’s miserable and she doesn’t know how to get out of it.

Fun times, basically.

Sort of that feeling you get when you accidentally find yourself standing in a white ballroom catching her not-boyfriend in the middle of a romantic dance with his ex kind of miserable. Maybe boyfriend was too strong a word. They had only just confessed to each other their feelings and they hadn’t even kissed.

The Diamond Ball was only the first in a long line of deceit. When Marinette used Zoe’s invitation to enter the Diamond Ball, the first thing she heard was Chloe Bourgeois’ loud obnoxious voice from across the room. Marinette turned the other way, heading directly to the podium where Adrien and Kagami were sitting. She just wanted to tell him it was okay, that she understood his obligations as an Agreste… that she didn’t even want to go to the ball anyway.

But her courage soon faded away as Adrien smiled at his ex-girlfriend. The way he looked at her - with so much emotion that she thought was only reserved for her. She tried to convince herself that it was only that Adrien was doing a convincing job of being in love - he was a model after all, he could fake a smile like the best of them.

Half truths and pretty white lies.

A/N Canon divergence:

Marinette never confronted ‘Adrien’ at the Diamond Ball, so Argos never happened. The events follow roughly the same events leading up to the London Special and post season 5.

Excerpt:

Marinette barged through the old wooden doors, marching out into the garden while the rest of the guests looked on in horror. The redhead jumped to the front and held her hands above her hair to get everyone’s attention. “We will take a short break. Please talk amongst yourselves! Thank you for your patience!”

She let out a scream as the door slammed shut.

This was not possible!

They wrote down their exes - but she couldn’t just well write down Chat Noir. Before today, the time they saw each other they parted on bad terms and there was a lot of unresolved tension. They had kissed and fooled around a bit in their suits and outside of the suit, it was barely even hand holding. She didn’t even think about writing down Adrien’s name because the chances of him being paired with her were astronomical.

“Before you formally quit, remember your contractual obligations,” the red headed lady warned.

Marinette startled. She was so quiet that she didn’t even know that they were standing right behind her. “What do you mean?”

“Well, you know, there's a lot of expenses that we have to pay. There’s the venue hire and the staff, you know, not to mention catering. So some level of compensation would be ideal.”

The red head handed her a tablet, on it she recognised it as the network contract. Marinette looked at the bottom line with alarm.

“I—,” she protested meekly. “But I don't have any money!”

“Well, you should have thought of this before you signed with the network,” the woman replied snippily.

“Yeah, but I didn't think that you were going to set me up with my ex boyfriend.”

“We had asked you to fill in the questionnaire and list all your exes. Don't you remember?”

Marinette remembered. Because he was fucking Chat Noir! There was no way she could say “I can’t marry him because I am Ladybug and we happened to date before I realised we accidentally killed his father.”

Fuck this. She thought testily. Shit like this was always happening to her. Why couldn’t it happen to someone more deserving (I don’t know, say, Lila?)

Summary: There were a lot of regrets in Marinette's life. Letting Adrien go. Rebounding with Chat Noir. But telling Chat Noir the truth about Hawkmoth's secret identity was her biggest regret. She just didn't realise how badly she messed it up until she found out that Chat Noir was none other than Adrien Agreste.

It seemed bizarre that after everything that happened between Marinette and Adrien, they should find themselves on a reality TV show called Married at First Sight.

Sometimes the best thing to do would be to work through their problems one step at a time.

They always say travel with your significant other to see if they are The One. Surely in Australia, the couples can find out if they are truly meant to be.
