Book 2: Éponine
Sketching Les Mis Chapter 4.2.1 - The Field Of The Lark
The boy is lost.
Marius moved out immediately because 1- he didn't want to go back to the house after the incident, understandable 2- he didn't want to have to do with the trial of Thénardier so he left without giving an address. He moved into Courfeyrac's new house. In my translation he doesn't say "I have come to sleep with you" which makes me sad.
Javert came by the Gorbeau building but he was gone, and he couldn't find him because he didn't remember his name. But you know, he could ask the landlady? And he had help moving there I mean it shouldn't be hard to find Courfeyrac ? Idk It doesn't seem like Javert is super interested in Marius atm
Marius is borrowing five francs a week to send to Thénardier in prison. He is out of work, his daydreaming is stopping him from getting to work again. He started going to an abandoned field where a murder happened because it's called "Field Of The Lark" which is all he knows about Cosette now. He lost all hope of finding her so he hangs on to almost superstition.
But rest assured, Hugo makes sure to tell us that Marius isn't out of his mind. And his wit is sharper and his judgements more sincere, he's aware of the world. He's just... lost.
