Young Fathers @ The Echo

LIPHEMRA
Opening up the night, after the traditional hour buffer to get drunk before the show or in Los Angeles’ case to get through traffic, Liphemra quietly appeared on stage. Half acoustic and half electronic, they spare the audience complex lyrics and hit us hard with a few songs with simple and memorable concepts. Liv Marsico heads the group with one of those voices that alone would seem wrong, but tonight it seems satisfying. It goes perfectly with the anxious, dramatic, and emotionally dark lyrics. There’s a mysterious draw to their music, an almost haunting ghostly finger drawing you near.
MAS YSA
The set was drowning in cables and behind them a man who looked like the high school best friend in movies. Mas Ysa behind his enormous set of electronics stood barefoot and clade in his classic white hippie top. His face formed a million expressions with each track, but mostly told a tale of concerned concentration. The vocals added to his dynamic beats followed the haunting sound. Shaking and quiet and then loud all at once they expressed simple ideas much like Liphemra, but there was something much more innocent about them. His beats are so interesting and dance-able; entertaining both the mind and the body, but they are simply too short. Each deliciously smooth transition was like little super rich Hersey’s kisses, savored until sadly melted away. There is no doubt in my mind that this man was in his element however, with his shoelessness, his effortless navigation of his massive rig, and his dancing. I hope to see much more of Mas Ysa in the future.
YOUNG FATHERS
The crowd thickened reflecting the sold out status of the venue and the anticipation grew. A bald backpacked photographer in front of me turned to ask if I had seen them live before. He promised me that Young Fathers was about to exceed my expectations. At the time this seemed impossible, but it in fact was true.
The results of a serendipitous meeting at the Bongo Club’s 16 and over hip hop night in Edinburgh finally graced the stage. Clad in what later in the night would be called “very hip dad clothes” by a fellow fan, Young Fathers wasted no time beginning their set immediately and not stopping until they were through. Allowing each song to flow into the next until they had gone through their entire newly released album White Men Are Black Men Too, half of both Tape Two and Dead, and a single off of TAPE ONE. The entire set was best described as intense. I’ve never seen so much packed into one set, it’s a wonder the Echo could contain the energy and intensity.
Alloysious Massaquoi (middle) provides the ballady RnB singing and raps. Kayus Bankole (right) supplies a quieter more threatening singing along with raps. Graham Hastings (left) is the master of the beats adding to the harmonies occasionally. They also brought with them a skinny hipster nameless drummer. Their roles on each track were entirely connected to their personalities. Having chatted with them humbly after the show it was clear how the part they played musically connected with the personality unique to them. Massaquoi was a lighter, more openly friendly man, while Bankole was more reserved and shy, both equally humble and appreciative for positive feedback bestowed on them by fans at the merch table. This diversity serves them incredibly well allowing them to transcend one musical genre and creating an extremely eclectic sound.
The unexpectedly hard-hitting beats combined with the chant-like harmonies, truthful raps, and a dash of RnB filled the super packed set. Beyond the sound Bankole consumed the stage dancing the only way appropriate to such addicting beats. This was a whole body I need about a five-foot radius kind of dance. He moved about the stage like an animal, leaning over the edge into the audience with piercing eyes as he rapped. Everything they had was poured out on that stage, a lot of it from their pores. It was not long before both Young Fathers and the crowd were dripping in sweat. Previously crisp white button ups were now just sweat rags.
After a good amount of super groovy dancing Hastings asked the crowd in a deliciously Scottish accent if they were ready to dance. This was the only time they paused in the set. This would have been laugh out loud funny if the audience weren’t already at his mercy. The beat for “Shame” came on and the dancing didn’t stop until the music did. Once they were finished, it was decidedly over, and the audience was desperate for more. The audience struggled to find the vocal power to beg for an encore due to pure exhaustion and the band apparently shared this same sentiment. The level of intensity meant no encore. It left the audience breathless.
