there is something in the way azazel (and his minions) are always overestimating or over-imitating john's care for his children. famously, of course, is "He wouldn’t be proud of me, he’d tear me a new one. You’re not my Dad" (1.22). but there's also meg setting a trap for john in 1.16 and being sure he'll come for them and dean being sure he won't. and there's azazel possessing samuel in 4.03 and immediately being kinder to dean than samuel has that entire episode: "Take the compliment, son.
